One would think that males like to look women more than other males...

I'm going to quote myself.

I see it like this way: I'm the observer and not the character. Similar to reading a book.

For example there's no way I wouldn't read a book or watch a movie because the lead character is not a male. The same goes to games.

I play both but recently I've been playing pretty exclusively my femShep. I see no reason not to. I'm not the character, it's Commander Shepard and for me it's female.

Hear hear!

I just started my first femshep run in ME1 because I've played both games to death as Sheploo and wanted a change of pace.

I've always played Shepard exclusively as female.... heterosexual myself but I don't see how that would change the mindset of a homosexual male (Why would a homosexual male play femshep? They're still male, not female.. their physical attraction just happens to be to the same gender... it renders the point moot. I have an old college friend who's gay, he plays males in games mostly... whereas I'm straight and play females frequently).

If I read a novel with a female protagonist, does that make me gay? If I watch a movie with a female protagonist does that make me gay? Why does playing a game as a gender opposite to my own make me gay?

I do it because it's a different perspective to experience / see the world from the one I have... men see / experience things different than women... controlling a female character lets me follow along the life of that character and see the things she experiences in a way that is subtlely different from how a fellow male might (and least in the case of a narrative driven game anyway).

Also... I play other games where I'm an alien.. or a robot... or an elf... or an orc... etc... cus it's different. Controlling a female character is just another list to add to that.... it's different to controlling just another simulacrum of myself.

Because you're ROLE-PLAYING as a female? Do you know what it means to be a female? If you're not a female, then you have no reason to role play as a female.

Besides, FemShep is overrated. I tried it once, and Jennifer Hale, always seemed so emotionless in all of her lines.

Your logic astounds me.  So I guess I have no business playing Mass Effect at all: I am not a space marine and therefore have no reason to role play as a space marine.

As to the Jennifer Hale comment, de gustibus non est disputandum, but I couldn't disagree more: Jennifer Hale is full of emotion.  I like the male actor too, but femshep better.

Besides if we want to play the homophobe game, as another poster pointed out, those who play male shep should be the candidates for being gay: why would a dude want to look at another dude for a whole game when he could be looking at a female?  We'd be forced to conclude "he must be gay."  (Sarcasm -- I don't really mean the seeming homophobic remarks I just made in case any moderator glances over my post).

OP: don't mind what stupid people say.

I died a little at the sheer irony of that line.  If JenHale is emotionless, the hell is automaton Mark Meer?

also, I think that's a bull**** line, "if you're not female you have no reason to play female."  It's about Role Playing someone you're not, it's also about enjoying the differences in interactions.  There's nothing wrong with a man roleplaying a female, and there's nothing wrong with a woman roleplaying a male.  It's about who you, the player, feel the character is.  For me, it's Shephard is a woman, for you, he's a man.

A newbie in the club asks, "what game is this."  I reply, "One of the greatest RPG's in my humble opinion."  Then he responds, "You're playing as a female and it seems like the conversation is getting a little heavy.  Are you gay?"

Why is it, homophobes call you gay for role-playing as a female character?  I've responded "Call me what you want, I just want to experience another side of the story, from a female perspective.  Sorry if my eyes don't always look through the same patriarchal glasses society provides for us males."

Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't personally experienced this, but that's usually because I don't play ME2 anywhere outside of my own room. Anyway, why do they do it? Because they are stupid pieces of...yeah. It's because they have nothing better to do than be complete dicks to others simply because they can. Ignore them. They're probably babbling mindless Call of Duty fans. No respect for real plot.

Just screw them all man, they aren't worth the time.

I play both, but I prefer femshep by far. Altough I roleplay the character, I'm not the character. I think it's just plain silly to draw conclusions of one's sexual orientation based on the fact that he/she plays with a character that's the opposite sex. Roleplaying or not.

That's right, remember folks... if you're not /really/ a 22nd century space marine who is hunted by an ancient alien species intent on wiping out life in the galaxy, then you have no reason to role play as a 22nd century space marine who is hunted by an ancient alien species intent on wiping out life in the galaxy!

Indeed. Better put down those games where you're a dwarf, elf, orc, or some other freakish mutant creature.

Mark Meer definitely is not as good as Jennifer Hale, but I enjoy playing as both Shepards.

I would  not agree ...

I dont know about theirs other performances but in  ME2 (less so in ME1) Mark is just as good if not betther than Janifer. He seems so antural and you realy belive he is Shepherd - man that inspires and people are willing to relly on him. Janifer is a bit detached of her role, she isnt nice as Paragon, and she is just brutal as Renegade, in fact she is too blunt, no depth there.

This is just my opinion though, there is no need to go and spread it around :)

If you're playing as a male Shep, doesn't that make you more gay than playing as a female:mellow:

@ OP

Could it be that this person just wanted to pick you about something? What he said is so damn stupid that I think that might be real reason behind his words.
What comes to voice acting I echo what many others has said: Mark Meer is good but Jennifer Hale is even better.

Listen up you nerd.

First, slap the shit out of that kid who asked if you're gay... not because it was offensive in any way, just make an example out of him - you don't joing an anime/gaming club not knowing what Mass Effect is. Not because Mass Effect is that awesome (not saying it's not) but because Mass Effect is like Lords of the Rings of next gaming - you don't have to read it because not everyone fancy that kind of "entertainment" but everyone knows that it exists and what it is.

Second, slap the shit out of whoever started a club like that, not because it's bad to starts clubs. Because you don't make a anime/gaming club. Why put weebos with nerds? Being a nerd doesn't make you a weebo and being a weebo doesn't make you a nerd. You can combine but it's not the same.

Third, slap the shit out of yourself. Not everyone who asks you if you're gay is a homophobe.

Cheers!

If I'm given the choice I play a female character (in any game and genre). I'll play those games for hours (especially a MMO) and watching the back of a woman is way better than watching a guy shaking his ass. Wouldn't call that gay.

Jennifer Hale is definitely not emotionless in the lines that she does. That's the reason why I play as femshep, because she delivers the lines so well. Most games out there has male main characters, so it's quite nice to play the role of a female hero, don't you think?

Agreed, she really does put alot of effort into and it shows. Some of her scenes are really quite powerful. Thats why I can no longer play the stoic manshep.  Also the fact im tired of the generic male hero. Its nice to see the opposite gender kick some butt just as well (in fact better in my eyes) then her male counterpart.
