I get the occasional disdainful comment (all jovial of course), but then I just point out the inevitable aesthetic choice:

A) Staring at pixellated male-bum, in 3rd person for hours on end
B) Staring at pixellated female-bum, in 3rd person for hours on end

On a serious note though, i prefer the voice acting of femshep and think the respective LI in ME2 are better characters.

The days of sprites are over.  While we haven't reached complete verisimilitude yet, it's good enough that I can find the women more pleasing than the men.

I'm male, and I fought my way through ME1 and ME2 with manshep only once because I couldn't bear the delivery but wanted to have a different perspective. Must have played as femshep half a dozen times, and when I start my 'canon' runthrough in anticipation of ME3 it will be as a femshep.

In DA2, I've played as both already and I think I'll continue to switch between them, because both male and female have pretty good delivery.

I have no problem playing either, but ultimately the voice acting clinches it for me.

FemShep's flirty voice is sexy. Someone needed to say it, already.

I love the story. The pause followed by the "what... are you gay or something?" reminds me of a friend of mine.

He always plays female characters and volunteers at a community theater, so we always make jokes at his expense at LAN parties and stuff. But the truth is he is married and is straight as an arrow. There is nothing wrong a guy playing as a woman (unless you play MMOs and tell people you're a girl IRL), just expect some comments like that. Know your crowd, try telling them you'd rather stare at a woman's behind instead of a man's when playing.

I have a FemShep on my harddrive, I just haven't done much because I can't get used to her voice. But I and probably many here have played games of the Tomb Raider series for example.

I see it like this way: I'm the observer and not the character. Similar to reading a book.
.

That's the best way to put it.
Mass Effect uses third-person narrative, with a voiced character, whose characteristics, personality is already set. You just guide him/her down the way.
It's different in a first person narrative, like DA:O or even more so with Fallout: New Vegas, where you represent the main character him/herself.

who cares HE is probably gay (the guy that asked u about f shep. OP), and wants to go out with you, nothing wrong with it of course, but I'm sure he was being all smart assic about it.

play the game the way you like, that's why its called a GAME, cause you do stuff in it that you can't do IRL.

my friends used to bug me about choosing Katana in mortal combat 3 on sega, but that usually ended when I cut off their heads with my awesome fans of death XD, I used to tell them it was a nice distraction for hetro males, they keep looking at her legs and boobs as I dispense justice on them hehe

I have no problem playing fem Shep. I just hate the voice actor. Too much off everything. I like the male voice much better. But, ME voice actors compared to DA2 it's like 3/5, both fem and male Hawk is awesome.

I personally chose a Femshep as my first runthrough because I figured that if I was going to watch someone from behind for over 20 hours... well... you do the math.

At this point I have 2 femshep, and 2 sheploo playthroughs.  I like to mix it up to see more of the story, and change strategies.

I was in my University Commons (an area where college students can hang out, study, eat food, play games, etc).  I'm about of a anime/gaming club (don't call me a nerd!).  Last night I've decided to bring in my xbox and ME2/Jade Empire to show people how awesome these games are, and well... if you don't think these games are awesome then "SHUN THE NON-BELIEVER!"

I was playing my alternative career, a fem. shep.  I was talking to Jacob, which at the moment my character is "courting."

A newbie in the club asks, "what game is this."  I reply, "One of the greatest RPG's in my humble opinion."  Then he responds, "You're playing as a female and it seems like the conversation is getting a little heavy.  Are you gay?"

Why is it, homophobes call you gay for role-playing as a female character?  I've responded "Call me what you want, I just want to experience another side of the story, from a female perspective.  Sorry if my eyes don't always look through the same patriarchal glasses society provides for us males."

Has anyone else experienced this?

My younger, 18, brother actually asked about why I play female characters once. I told him it was because I'm comfortable with my sexuality and like getting different views by playing each character. A couple weeks later he started a new ME1 character and it was female, I just cracked up and started laughing.

The friend who started me on gaming plays females in over 90% of his games, I once asked him why...He told me if his going to spend that much times watching someones ass running around on screen, he would rather watch a womans than a mans....Made perfect sense to me :), so from then on I started playing 90% men in my game and see his point, as a woman I would rather watch a mans ass :)

Yeah, my own friends used to give me **** all the time for playing female characters in games. I do it all the time.

I usually just give people the "stare at a chick's ass for hours" cop-out anymore if they get curious. I don't have a real reason, I just do it.

IT DOESN'T MATTER. Say here's a man. He's man 'A'. My life remains completely and utterly unchanged whether man 'A' marries a woman or man. I don't care if you want to marry a man, woman, or donkey (actually no donkies) it doesn't affect me.
That said, I have a few fem sheps for a broader experience of the game. It doesn't make me gay, it just means i'm a straight man playing both sexes of a character. If people find that enough reason to insult, then i'm thinking it's less about what they're saying, and more that they just enjoy insulting others. classic incsecurity. It's a major problem for americans. Especially Gun Tot'ing NRA southern boys  "GAY MERRAGE IZ BAD ND I DRINK BEER SHOOT GUNS AND HAVE LOW IQ LOLZ"

btw i love playing my male shep but dear god mark meer's voice is the epitome of monotonous.

Besides isn't being a woman trapped inside a man's body different from being gay? Wait . . . what if you're a lesbian trapped inside a man's body . . . is that gay?

I don't play as FemShep mainly because I try to model my characters around myself and involve myself in their story. In that sense, it wouldn't work for my character to be female.

Straight male, and all of my female Shepards are based off of real life friends. Problem solved.

Doesn't that limit your roleplaying a lot? If I only played people like me I'd miss half the game in any decent RPG.

"Hey man, why are you playing as that girl?"
"Because she's hot."
"Oh, okay. Cool."

No, it's never been an issue for me.  I like to play the character, not the avatar.  And no, I'm not female, nor evil, nor a space marine, nor a dwarf, no an elf, nor a savior of the world, nor Jedi Knight, nor am I Batman, but I sometimes like to RP these things through video games.

As for the Meer/Hale arguments ... you now have to watch this video in its entirety.

I've only played through once but I used a femshep. I preferred the way I could get her to look than the male Shepard. Listening to some of the voice acting, I'm glad I chose female. Besides I got to romance Liara either way so whatever. I'm sure I'll play through as a male at some point to get the full experience. But never once did I think, "well I'm a straight male so I can't play as a female." It's role-playing... that's kind of the definition of the experience.

If anybody I knew had a problem with that, well then that's their problem! The only person I know who has also played the game exclusively uses female chars in RPGs. (I mix it up... went with male in KOTOR for example)

Oh and I also try to model characters after myself, but I figure actions speak louder than appearance. Besides, I made my female Shepard to look how I'd like to look if female. I've always thought it'd be fun to be reincarnated as a woman after this life to get the full human experience. :)

as a dude, i like femshep for two reasons: better voice acting plus a totally different experience. Nothing wrong with RP'ing as a hot chick.

That said, about 50% of my playthroughs have been f!. And about 70% of those have been renegade.

It limits my roleplaying even more if my character was the opposite gender from me. And I am by no means missing half the game.

I have a femshep profile myself, but I made my Maleshep look just like me for the reason Sleeper said.
