I've never played rogues in fantasy RPGs as far as I can remember (think Eye of the Beholder, or perhaps a title or two earlier than that).

I decided that would change in DA2. I went for the dual-wielding rogue. I poison my blades in tough fights. Feels weird to finally try for the first time something that has been an option for ages!

Anyway. Yesterday, I found a better dagger after one of those fights. After I switched, I realized that my new dagger had kept the deathroot effects, while my older dagger, in my inventory, didn't anymore. It's like the effects apply to the weapon slots instead of the items.

Huh, was I wrong to have expected something else?

A developer could better answer this for you, but I believe all effects such as poisons are tied to the character.

So you can't poison a blade then swap it with your teammate and expect for your teammate to have the blade poisoned. You will still retain the poison regardless, I believe (until the time runs out).

Actually I believe poisons just function as a party buff now.

I just tested it, and it only buffs the party member who consumes it.

EDIT: And apparently debuffs when you get knocked out  XD
