I have come to adore Carver during my mage playthrough. Sure, he's frustrated and resentful, but when the chips are down he'll always have your back ("If you've got a problem with my sister, you've got a problem with me!"). I'm going to leave him at home during the Deep Roads, because I really like the drama of an apostate mage with a templar brother. Bethany was sweet and all, but the story with Carver has more emotion and more depth. I'm really digging it.

I don't want to say it has more depth but, srsly.

Hawke and Carver are me and my brother. I wonder if there's some link up between those who like Carver and people who are the oldest with little brothers that they fight with. Because, like, as soon as the game started, I slipped into the exactly the same relationship with Carver that I have with my little bro.

He's a little ******, sometimes we love each other, sometimes we want to rip each other's eyes out, sometimes he's upset with me and I can't figure out why, but at the end of the day, we'll stick up for each other. And then probably go back to fighting. I liked having that option. I liked being able to needle Carver back.

It's not specifically a brother thing, as Hawke and Carver remind me of me and one of my younger sisters.

There are four of us, I am the oldest (and I'm a lady). The others are two girls and a boy. Middle girl has alllllways been all "waaaaah I'm not special because I'm the middle GIRL at least the other middle child is a BOY so there's something unique about him waaaaaaaah." She's gotten a lot better since she was a teenager (naturally) but some of what Carver says and does is SO EXACTLY HER when she was 16 or so.

None of my siblings are like Bethany, though. She's sort of creepy perfect.

I didn't want to generalize that far, but I'm glad the sibling nuttiness remains.

Bethany is scary perfect. I almost wanted to play with her so I could have a sibling that liked me. Then I realized that's waaaaaay too freaky. Too much fantasy there, man.

The Carver/Hawke relationship more than any other part of the game. But I also have a little brother in RL that I have almost the same relationship with.

I kept reloading the conversations you could have with Carver after the Birthright quest just cos it felt so good insulting him for some reason lol No matter what choice you choose he gets that "oh i'm an idiot for saying that" look.

I'm an only child and find Carver to be a whiny prat.

He, Fenris, and Anders should start a rock band. They could call it Whining, B*tching, and Moaning.

I would so wear their T-shirts.

I'm not looking forward to my mage playthrough. I'd make Carver a Grey Warden, but I don't want to give him the satisfaction.

I love Carver. I think he shows the most growth in the game, particularly if you give him to the GWs. When he said he was proud of me it was the best moment in the game for me.

From the beginning I understood where he was coming from, why he gave people such a hard time to mask his own inadequacies. I don't think him joining the templars was that strange either (even though I don't prefer that route). When he found out he was named after a templar he thought it was a sign of what his father had hoped for him. He's desperate to find his way. What was he supposed to do, sit at home taking odd jobs while Hawke becomes Champion? He needs to live his life. What else was he supposed to do? Fighting is his only skill, Aveline messed up his chance at the guard and he has too much of a sense of honor to become a common mercenary.

So many people just dislike him because he's disagreeable. But that's what makes him great. Not every relationship is rainbows and sunshine, and the ones that are are boring. It made it all the more rewarding when Hawke and Carver finally repaired their relationship in the end.

Not likely for long. Aveline wouldn't even want him for his lack of respect and or ability to follow orders. She was an Officer in the ranks. If she even thought he had an ounce of professional soldier in his body? She'd have recruited him.

Aveline is a control freak, it wasn't her place to interfere. Carver was desperate for a place to belong and make a difference. She assumed he'd have an attitude problem with any superior because of his relationship whith his older sibling, which is a lot more complicated than 'Carver doesn't like authority'. Furthermore, Aveline is hardly one to criticize about inability to follow orders. She was promoted for that very fact.

The wardens have to take orders and show respect, and he did well with them. Aveline simply didn't have any faith in him and stuck her nose where it didn't belong.

Has anyone managed to get her to rival status before the Deep Roads misson?  Siding against the mages typically gives -10 but I've only been able to the edge of black...

*pulls out armchair psychologist pipe*

Your attraction was clearly caused by feeling inferior to your sister throughout your childhood.

*puffs it thoughtfully*

Carver just... I wish I could keep Bethany as a mage. He just drives me bonkers, it gets old fast. I'm the oldest of four, but my younger brothers always supported me when I did stuff, so I look at Carver with the horror of what could have been, had my little brothers been a jerk. Bethany and Hawke get along better, as I do with my little sister, so it's not grating.

I cannot stand Carver. He gets better at the end, but no matter how conciliatory or supportive Hawke is with him, he's still a selfish jerk.

Yes, he starts out as a selfish 18 year old jerk, but I don't have to excuse that based solely on youth. I raised a son past the selfish teenage jerk phase and don't have a lot of patience for it.

Carver's ongoing rivalry with his brother and complaints about how he's always in Hawke's shadow make me want to shake him and tell him to STFU and SHINE ON HIS OWN instead of accepting his place in that shadow.
