I have come to adore Carver during my mage playthrough. Sure, he's frustrated and resentful, but when the chips are down he'll always have your back ("If you've got a problem with my sister, you've got a problem with me!"). I'm going to leave him at home during the Deep Roads, because I really like the drama of an apostate mage with a templar brother. Bethany was sweet and all, but the story with Carver has more emotion and more depth. I'm really digging it.

I'm an only child and find Carver to be a whiny prat.
He, Fenris, and Anders should start a rock band. They could call it Whining, B*tching, and Moaning.

Aveline is a control freak, it wasn't her place to interfere. Carver was desperate for a place to belong and make a difference. She assumed he'd have an attitude problem with any superior because of his relationship whith his older sibling, which is a lot more complicated than 'Carver doesn't like authority'. Furthermore, Aveline is hardly one to criticize about inability to follow orders. She was promoted for that very fact.Torax wrote...
Not likely for long. Aveline wouldn't even want him for his lack of respect and or ability to follow orders. She was an Officer in the ranks. If she even thought he had an ounce of professional soldier in his body? She'd have recruited him.

I love Carver. I think he shows the most growth in the game, particularly if you give him to the GWs. When he said he was proud of me it was the best moment in the game for me.
Carver hate in a nutshell. Doesn't matter how he feels, it's aaaalll about Hawke.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

From the beginning I understood where he was coming from, why he gave people such a hard time to mask his own inadequacies. I don't think him joining the templars was that strange either (even though I don't prefer that route). When he found out he was named after a templar he thought it was a sign of what his father had hoped for him. He's desperate to find his way. What was he supposed to do, sit at home taking odd jobs while Hawke becomes Champion? He needs to live his life. What else was he supposed to do? Fighting is his only skill, Aveline messed up his chance at the guard and he has too much of a sense of honor to become a common mercenary.
So many people just dislike him because he's disagreeable. But that's what makes him great. Not every relationship is rainbows and sunshine, and the ones that are are boring. It made it all the more rewarding when Hawke and Carver finally repaired their relationship in the end.Aveline is a control freak, it wasn't her place to interfere. The wardens have to take orders and show respect, and he did well with them. Aveline simply didn't have any faith in him and stuck her nose where it didn't belong.

Bethany is scary perfect. I almost wanted to play with her so I could have a sibling that liked me. Then I realized that's waaaaaay too freaky. Too much fantasy there, man.

None of my siblings are like Bethany, though. She's sort of creepy perfect.

She is a Flanders.

No, Bethany is just like an old English professor I had, who was a nice version of my own sister. I was madly in love with her. My professor, not my sister. Um...
