So I have been playing this game for close to two weeks now and have been enjoying it very much. However, I have yet to beat the game due to an issue I have been having with keeping interest with my character, whether it is due to certain decisions I have made along the way or the class / specialization I chose.

My highest character is a level 16 Rogue Archer - Duelist / Ranger. Though I enjoy the class' playstyle and tactics involving certain kiting mechanics, I am rather disappointed with how much damage archers are doing in the console version. As a result, I am finding myself growing tired of the class.

Right now I am split between a dual wield warrior and a mage. If I were to pursue my warrior, he would specialize in Templar in order to keep mages under control, as well as Berserker in order to boost his overall dps. The combination seems like a good idea and I can see how their talents will benefit from one another. However, if I pursue a mage, then I will most likely take an interest in an Arcane Warrior / Blood Mage hybrid. The mage's purpose would be split between heavy damage and debuffs while I design Morrigan to be my support healer / CC

For the most part, I know what I need to know about warriors, but I know little about mages. I'm familiar with magic and willpower being the core stats for a mage and I also aware how these stats will change once you pick up the specilizations. So my question is, If I were to pursue this combination, which spec would I want to pick up first? Idealy, Blood mage seems the better choice. That way you can focus on your magic / constitution from the very beginning and wouldn't have to worry much about willpower. That is also assuming the hybrid requires you to focus more on Magic / constitution.

It depends how you play really, I picked up Blood Mage first since i stacked Constitution and magic quite high. I am sure you could get by till 14 with a fairly low amount of Willpower, and just use what buffs you can afford.

Personally, I enjoyed playing the Straight blood mage untill 14, just offered a more straight mage playstyle, as opposed to the sudden hack and slash of AW.

Yea I gotta say that I agree with Leonceo. I made the mistake of wanting to try out the arcane warrior badly, so I did, only to regret it when I understood how the playstyle worked. You gotta remember that a mage doesn't really get any special strikes at all, which makes you dependant on each heavy swing. If you, like me, play on nightmare, this means you get smacked to bits unless you got a capable tank. I very much prefer mages to be mages and warriors to be warriors, you are not going to be able to compete with a warrior. Not over the long, exhausting battles. Ultimately the choice is yours, but ****, a combination of inferno / blizzard just looks awesome, smack a walking bomb on the middle target and be prepared for a gory end to all the foes in the vicinity! You cannot do stuff like that with an arcane warrior. You will be using most of your abilities to crowd control and keep up combat magic . Which, to me, is utter fail.

Anyway, those are my two cents, you are entitled to your own opinion as well ;)

Cheers,

EDIT: If you are interested in creating a DPS-ish warrior. I very much enjoyed the Dualwielding berserker. I meant to pick reaver / berserker but I didn't know how it was unlocked till it was too late. With my mage playthrough I will try to unlock it.

Thank you both for your input and I have to agree with you. My decision with wanting to play a mage has to do with wanting to be a mage, not someone in plate that auto strikes. The only thing I would want from being an arcane warrior is the ability to wear plate since the robes look so unappealing. Now about blood mages, does stacking magic / constitution really benefit you? When I did a quick playthrough on my mage and went into blood magic, My health was already halfway just from casting fireball / inferno when I had like 25 constitution. Could anyone with more experience playing a blood mage tell me about the specialization?

I personally love the mage class! even without the prestige classes, since u got so much to choose from, witch makes it hard to play any other class, altrough i like the rogue i have made so far(complete difference in stuff that drops!)

As for witch spell trees, i suggest u first take all the tier1 single target damage spells and well as mind blast. and then build out as u please, i myself like fireball a lot since u can get it early and its the only aoe spell with a knockdown that does't have a cast time, so always usefull, u can also build out the tree leading to crushing prison, since its usefull if u go AW(for telekinetic weapons) as well as one of the best mini-boss kill spells in the game.

just make sure u sync your spells with Morrigans, like, she takes frost and the Hex tree, and u Take fire and glyphs(just an example) spells that work great together are the hex spells and the frost spells, the 1st hex and CoC make sure u can freeze anyone without trouble!(even bosses!)

even if u let Morrigan take all the CC and Aoe spells, make sure u yourself got 1 or 2 yourself also, couse there are more then eneugh encounters where u are alone, and as a mage, having the wrong spells can be deadly...

Oh! and get at least 1 of the heal spells, just in case u run out of pots.(or to save them)

I have't had a try at blood mage yet(since i thought there were more then 1 way to unlock it...) but if u got the Warden's keep DLC u get 2 free talents there that are also blood magic and quite handy!!

First is Power Of Blood, witch lets u sacrifive some health to get a huge mana regen boost(look like u spray blood across half the room when u use it) the other one is a Damage spell that use your health also and does an exstra dot damage on darkspawn. also seems u can unlock 2 other but don't got those yet,

every class has different abilitys that u can gain there, so go try it out.

As for BM, i think that have as much constitution as u have willpower is the best, just look at your health as a mana bar, should be self-explaining. besides, to have a large mana/health pool u need at least 35 points in each i think, then again, using big spells and having much fatigue can have the same effect. just keep in mind that the Magic stat increases spell damage, willpower give a bigger mana pool. ppl confuce the 2 much.
