You go from being a refugee running from the blight to being one of the most important people in Kirkwall, and in the end you can even become viscount. If that's not a rise to power than I don't know what is.

Really?  What was your first command as Viscount?

"Isabela, get the damn boat ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We're outta here!!!!!!!!!"

Seriously . . .empty title given after Act 2, that makes absolutely nobody listen to you, and only increases the number of rioting mobs of both mundane and blood mage lunatics on the streets at night.

How does nobody listen to you when you have the viscount, the leader of the circle, the leader of the chantry and the leader of the templars all wanting your help

That's called being the errand boy. They tell you what to do and you have no way to talk sense into anyone. You actually can't even refuse to help them.

Tell me - who DID listen to your Hawke?  Because I need to go find those people . . .they weren't in my game.

It's not about "listening" to Hawke, it's about when there's crap going on, them looking to him for help. And he did help the viscount and orsino/meredith, but of course that doesn't mean Hawke gets to make their decisions for them of something.

Guess the Warden was just an errant boy then?
There's a difference between picking flowers for an alchemist, and winning a war on behalf of a king, you know. Just a slight one.

So, to make a real world comparison,if you had your country's prime minister and the pope looking for your help, you'd dismiss it as just being an errand boy?

Lmao!  Indeed.  Absolutely no one listens to you, and everyone wants you DEAD.  It's like you just walked up to people and said "Hey everybody, I'm the champion"  and they would all go insane.

You're listing titles. Titles don't hold power unless they do.

The populace talks about Hawke's adventures and admire him

And you have all the main political parties looking for his help

I don't get it, do you people really feel like NPCs treat Hawke the same way in act 1 and in act 3 or something?

No you mix up words and meanings. Being powerful does not equal having titles, and the other way round. Being famous does not equal having power. And being admired does not equal power. Having power means to be able to influence things. Change things. Like Anders, like Meredith and even like Orsino. Hawke is just a tool for all of them.

He helps them?

The VIscount is dead before Hawke is made Champion, but lets see.  The Arishok asks for Hawke . . the Viscount says, Hawke, please go talk sense into the Arishok for me?  How'd that work out in your game?

"Arishok, could you hand those crriminals over for trial?"
"No, now let's attack the City!!!!"

Hmm, maybe in Act 3 . . . .

"Hi, Orsino sent me to see if I could help you overthrow Meredith"
"The Champion, KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Hi Thrask, hi Grace, can you let my sister go and we can see about getting rid of Meredith and making things better?
"No Champion, now you DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Meredith, don't anul the Circle please?"
"No, now gather your forces together so I can annihilate them!!!!!!!!"

"Orsino, maybe you could have the mages stay in their rooms while we resolve this peacefully?"
"We will never surrender, now you DIE!!!!!!!!!!"

Nope, don't seem to be listening to me at all . . . .  .

Well Hawke had the power to defeat the Arishok and get rid of the Qunari for starters. That's hardly a small feat.

Since i had to leave Kirkwall at the end of the game, levaing my estate etc... wouldnt it be more appropriate to call it rise and fall from power? Actually i never had the power to begin with. Yes, champion so what? Not even a governor or something. Kirkwall is collapsed anyway. What is the point? No one will remember the name Hawke in couple months.

You know...I kinda wish we were just Kirkwall nobility, well-liked enough that we may become Viscount one day. And then the Mage/Templar argument slowly costs us everything until we've finally hit rock bottom.

That would have been an interesting twist to the whole 'gain prestige and renown' thing that most games do.

Also, out of curiosity I just googled the definition of "rise to power"

"noun
the act of attaining or gaining access to a new office or right or position (especially the throne); "Elizabeth's accession in 1558" http://dictionary.re...e/rise to power

Sounds about right, any way you look at it.

Well Hawke is undoubtly good at killing stuff. If that's the rise to power then that's what every hero in every game does. I mean the Warden was also rising to power, potentially even more than Hawke considering the Warden can become King/Queen of Ferelden or King of Orzammar. Seriously, the rise to power feature is just as lame as the family theme. You may or may not become Viscount, but only in the epilogue. You have a family but only to feel bad when they die without you being able to do anything about it. What really remains of all that this game was supposed to be? A streamlined story that serves as a teaser for DA3.

I don't want to say everything is bad. I liked quite some things in the game. The conpanions, their quests for once. But overall I just don't understand what Bioware was thinking advertising Hawke like some sort of unstoppable conqueror and then make him/her an errant boy/girl for people more powerful then Hawke.

Wait, your Champion Hawke got an office, some rights, and a fancy chair?

Mine didn't get any of that.

I never saw a throne. Hawke only gets Viscount if he/she sides with the templars, and only in the epilogue. Varric speaks about it or you would not even notice. And Hawke disappears afterwards which means all power and wealth gone for a life on the road somwhere.

Unless you joined the Templars, the Rise to Power ended in the conclusion of Act 2. Which is probably why the game sucked from then on.

And IF you join the Templars... yeah, you become Viscount. But then you dissappear and everything's exactly the same whether you were Viscount or not. no information as to whether you were a GOOD viscount or a BAD one, just 'we all drifted away blahblah'

writing fail.

Well, Hakwe not being the most influential/powerful person in Kirkwall/Thedas/the World and not being able to change reality on a whim doesn't negate the fact that there is in fact a rise to power. If anything, it's plain more realistic this way.

@The Angry one

So was mine. But technically, I didn't get to rule much as queen either, and apparently I disappeared too. (Though I personally think, Xana Cousland has simply been hiding in the bed for the past few years, because after a year of constant warfare and horror, she suddenly remembered she had feelings :o)

Wardens live to serve. There is nothing wrong with that. But getting promised a rise to power and then being made errand boy/girl sucks.

I don't know how to tell you that you understand. Did you read the OP? The problem is Hawke only gains a position or right or office in one of two possible endings and then you lose it again. And it is not part of the game, just the epilogue. It's like two sentences. Actually Varric does not even say that Hawke becomes Viscount, just that it was offered. No word if Hawke accepted or whatever. Only that he/she disappeared. And Champion is no position or anything as far as I know. It is only a title for someone who saved Kirkwall. Like the Warden was Champion of Redcliffe.
