Is there a way to max out her friendship and just not use her so i don't get the attack speed bug?

Some people have reported getting the glitch just by passing a certain friendship threshold after talking to her, so unless you get lucky, you're suffering with the rest of us.

Maxing it out isn't the culprit. As soon as you pass the 50% friend mark, you can get the buff problem. And she is forced into your party at the end of Act 2. Even if you made it thru Act 2 without the bug appearing, you are likely going to have to avoid her companion quest in Act 3.
The solution is to always have her in your party when you load a game. Given the freezes the PS3 has, that isn't an option for me.
I had to basically scour the wiki to find all possible rivalry points and reroll so that I can take her down the rivalry path instead.

Dang it ... I'd like her and maybe Sebastian in my party eventually but have been avoiding the hassle of bugs moreso. I wish this one would hurry up and get patched. Either this or just disable the "buffs Hawk" part of the skill.

There is always this mod, if you are playing on the PC:
http://www.dragonage...ile.php?id=2299
It either changes the friendship buff to the rivalry buff, or improves it but only applies it to the companion and not Hawke.

Can someone point me to directions for editing the effect out of save games? Thanks.

Click here and start reading on about page 13 and keep reading until you find the solution.
The solution involves:
1) Downloading the dragon age saved game editor (link is in the thread)
2) Editing 2 lines in your saved game file (easy to do.)
3) Downloading a mod to keep the bug from happening again (link is in the thread.)
I had the bug and that worked for me.

I just finsihed my second playthrough without ever getting the bug AND with maxed out friendship with Isabela as my only romance option. Also, I hardly ever used her in my party since I was playing a DW rogue. I also completed all her side quests. I should note, however, that my first character got the bug at the beginning of Act 3 so these are hard-won and painful lessons. This is what I did to avoid the bug (without a savegame editor option):
1) Turn off autosave. It is imperative you control ALL your saves.
2) Before you save any game double-check your abilities screen to see if the Thumbs Up is there. If it is, don't save.
3) If you feel you MUST save with her in your party (I NEVER did personally), make sure to do it in Kirkwall in daytime or at Merrill's House, Fenris' Mansion, or Anders' clinic. If you save anywhere else and reload that save you get the bug. Never save with her in the middle of a mission if you intend on removing her from future quests.
All of the above assumes she will not be a regular member of your party.
***SPOILERS***
Of course, the problem is what do you do in those instances when you are forced to have her in your party and then she is removed forcibly by the game itself? Basically, I did not save at all. I started her final Act 2 quest that leads to the Arishok duel and completed the final quest to get to Act 3 all without one save. Obviously, since I play on Hard mode, this was next to impossible. Since I had, however, beaten the Arishok on my first playthrough fair and square, I figured no harm done to downgrade to casual just for that fight.
Hope all or some of that helps!

I used her a lot during my first playthrough. I maxed out her friendship very early on. Never noticed any kind of bug with it.
So it can work, apparently. If you're lucky.

I used her all the time with my S/S Hawke (with Seb and Anders mostly)
I had every party member at max friendship. Never had a issue. Lucky I guess.
