Non-sarcastic Hawke is just too dreary.

I like to pick a lot of the purple lines, but I don't like it as a dominant tone, since I too often end up wincing at the occasions when Hawke decides to display her "wit". I wish there was a way to set Hawke's dominant tone permanently, so I wouldn't have to worry that joking around with Varric will change it.

I try to balance between the 3 types.

I really wish the tone you Hawke took had some impact on the investigate options. It really jars me when my aggressive rogue Hawke tells someone to get to the point, then politely asks them a question regarding the events taking place.

I can only imagine the state of confusion the NPC experiences.

Hawke threatens NPC.
"Ahhh, no I'll tell you whatever you need to know!"

Hawke asks his question.
"Oh, you're not so bad, I thought you were going to kill me."

Hawke kills NPC after getting information.

Nevermind, that's actually pretty damn funny.

Snarky FemHawke is pretty much pure unadulterated win. First time in a BioWare (or Obsidian/Black Isle, for that matter) RPG I've ever played the first time through with a female PC.

This.  FemHawke's voice acting, especially for te sarcastic route, is made of highly concentrated awesome.  I think she won me over when you first meet Anders.  "So how about it?  A favor for a favor?"  "I'm gonna need some specifics here.  I don't do anything involving children or animals."  I was expecting a joke of course, but the fact she was willing to make herself the brunt of the joke in a way 95% of women find extremely insulting, made it totally out of left field.  Hilarious.  Shame that Anders didn't even react.  Stupid Justice, no sense of humor.  DAA Anders would've eaten that joke up.  :(

Sometimes I think it is about which personality you played first. It sticks with you, and others pale a little in compason. I too played a predominantely snarky female Hawke (with a dose of diplomacy or agressiveness when i felt it was relevant) and consequent playthroughs with different personality felt a little lacking.

I think this is true. What you play first is what that character becomes and everything else feels a bit "wrong".

I prefer the aggressive/direct responses, though of course i mix it up some. I stay away from the ones that are just stupid, or cruel for no reason at all.

Personally i feel the sarcastic/witty dialogue are too much like a defense mechanism. Makes Hawke somewhat of a shallow person who uses sarcasm and humor as a shield and we never get to know the person behind it. Diplomatic is too much out to please everyone like someone who is insecure and needs approval from everybody. Feels like diplomatic Hawke rarely takes a stand and tells everyone from desperate poor people to psycopath blood mages and religious militants: "let's be friends, we can work something out". I'm generalizing, of course, it's not quite as clear cut as that.

I tend to find playing as a "witty" Hawke as almost painful at times. I maker it a point to avoid the purple option almost every time I'm in a serious situation. Even when it's the dominant personality.

Making a jokes regularly is one thing, but many times Sarcastic Hawke comes across as something of an obnoxious sociopath.

I shouldn't have done a sarcastic run first I think.
I had lots of fun with the sarcastic dialog and Hawke always chipping in with a snide remark or two.

Goody-goody Hawke or "Look at me I'm tough. Rawr." Hawke are rather dull by comparison.
Not that the dialog is *bad* exactly, but sarcasm is so much better, at least for me.
Anyone else agree?

Goody-goody Hawke is such a bore! I didn't think tough Hawke was boring though. But I definitely agree that charmHawke is by far the most fun to play.

I usually play as a goody-goody and I"m loving the smart-ass Hawke. When you talk to Macha in act 1 and ask if the templars killed & ate her brother. Pure gold.

Or playing sarcastic as your dead mother lies on your lap? Really?

None of the options are sarcastic. They're... a proud person trying to hide how painful everything is. Sarcastic Hawke has the best "trying to be tough and so obviously failing" vibe of the three.

What I really like about sarcastic Hawke is how much Hawke just really doesn't care. Can't take things seriously, doesn't really work himself up beyond what needs to get done ... but can be helpful in terms of what he does.

Sarcastic Hawke isn't just about being funny though.  It's also an attempt at being charming too.  The purple diamond is when you try to be more convincing about something or charm someone.
