I'm all for bonus content based of previous game files, but as long as it doesn't intervene with something as basic as my companion's armor.

It's not just from an Awakening's transfer. You can get Finding Nathaniel from... the Martyr preset, I think?
Yup that.
edited to add. You can always use a save game generator if you really wanted to tweak the plot lines.

btw it's stuff like this and addons in general for why I'd never play an rpg on a console compared to PC

So if you didn't pick the preset and the game doesn't flag Nathanial's survival you're sol.

No. Then you should be able to get it in a Deep Roads side quest that involves following two dwarves that took your path in to the Deep Roads. They can be found in High Town.MelfinaofOutlawStar wrote...

Fool's Gold is in Act 2. Nathaniel is in Act 3. The flaw in flagging can at times make it flag Fool's Gold in place of Nathaniel. But they're in 2 separate acts. The flaw can be for example where plot flags don't even properly show the Keep being fully upgraded.

This. Two playthroughs and I've never found the piece.

I hear there's a mod that works on these (and the romance) flags. I haven't tried it yet. I've got it loaded on my game, I just haven't gotten far enough (to act 2, since fool's gold showing up will let me know) to check.
