He says I have to pay him back double when I come back, and since I'm not coming back for awhile does he assume I'm dead and I don't have to pay back the 100 soverign? Or, is it already paid through the soverign I do make from the expedition

He pays you a visit after you return in Act II.He will ask for his money and then threatens you if you refuse.Later on he attacks you.

He'll come confront you in act 2, demand his money and try to extort more. you can send him packing (since you wont have enough money to pay him what he demands) and he'll ambush you later.

I ended up selling potions to make enough to pay my own way :| Didnt want that jerkoff in my face later.

That's to try to extort more coin from you, The moey you borrowed plus interest is paid back automatically from the profits.

He exists to ensure the player can always begin the Deep Roads expedition if they spend too much money on other ends in Act 1.

Hawke also mentions that he/she paid Dougal off "years ago" when informed of his presence in Act 2, so he is simply attempting to extort more money than you owed him. Show him the door, and then your sword/dagger/bow/staff!

Plus you get the classic cake comment if you let him invest - I do it every time now just for that alone:)

What does he say? I must have missed it/wasn't paying close attention.I'm on my second playthrough and I paid my own way this time.

This is probably a stupid question but, if I DO have the required 50 sovereigns and I still use Dougal (because I like doing things differently over playthroughs), I start Act II with no money? As much as I had before I took Dougal's offer?

I easily got almost 100 Sovereigns before I went to the expedition without him, would have gotten past the 100 if I had not foolishly bought some useless equipment.

"She [Leandra] spends all her time making poison and cake. Tell me you didn't try the cake."

Dougal is there just in case the player actually overspends and doesn't have sufficient coin after completing all of the available quests. Your 50 sovereigns gets returned at the beginning of Act 2 if you pay it, otherwise there's no change in Hawke's fundage.

The only reason to pay yourself is getting the achievement. Killing this thug has no further consequences.

You guys have it wrong. When he comes to see you in act 2 he has already been paid back what was promised but now he wants more from Hawke. He is exorting you cause he lost all of his cash.
