Meer tends to frequently place emphasis on the wrong words in conversations. For example, someone will say to Shepard, "Take this disc. It's got the information you need." The proper response to that situation would be to reply, "This disc contains all the information?" whereas Meer's delivery would be something like "This disc contains all the information?" (what other discs do you see, Shepard?) One little change in emphasis and suddenly Shepard sounds like a dolt.

It's hard to say whether it's bad acting or just bad directing, but mistakes like that make it seem like Meer phones in a lot of his dialog. That, in addition to the occasional flat delivery, is why I prefer Hale.

I like Meer and I actually like the fact that he doesn't add too much emotion to his lines. My idea of Shepard has always been one of a tightly in control, hardboiled kind of hardcore soldier, one who doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve. In that sense, I prefer Meer.

I prefer Hale. The bit where Shepard has a drink with Chakwas just sounds weird coming out of Meer, since he's supposed to have helped polish off a bottle of brandy, but still talks in that same damn monotone. It's like he's just been sitting there watching her get drunk while remaining completely sober. It's kinda creepy.

Mostly though, it's a question of the way they play the character, rather than the quality for me. Meer is generic army guy, while Hale makes Shepard something a bit different.

Having said that, they both gave better than usual performances in Lair of the Shadowbroker, so hopefully that's a sign of things to come.

I like them both for different reasons , Meer cause it fits more with the goody type .
Hale if you want the more straight serious no nonesense heroine .
Meer brings more comic value at different places , especially as a paragon that had enough .
It fit so much more Meer reaction , then suddenly being nice with Hale .

i prefer Meer. i'll tell you why.

Meer while doesnt hit the emotional high or low points as well, he's more believable over all with his consistency. going from one line of dialogue to another doesnt feel as awkward as it does with Hale.

playing femshep theres points where she's angry or being super happy or w/e, emotional high point of some sort, and you hit another choice and she resets to neutral because you asked a question or something and the difference in tone and delivery is so jarring it rips you out of it. with Meer he does the transitions better so its a more enjoyable experience for me

Mark Meer is not a perfect voice actor, but he seems to be getting progressively better. His voice acting in Shadow Broker and Arrival was top notch, IMHO.

I need dont see how ANYONE can think Hale does a better job than Meer. Hale's voice is so ridiculously monotone that it drives me crazy. Her intimidation dialogue in the Legion-Tali fight is a perfect example of monotone.

I guarantee you don't do playthroughs as Femshep then. Watch the trial scene at Tali's loyalty mish, choose the Renegade option, and prepare to be blown away.

Really, both VA's have their strengths, but Hale, if ANYTHING, is criticized for her being too over-the-top and unbelievable, NOT her being monotone. Meer is criticized for that, and his lack of emotional connection to the character.

Meer is the best renegade because of his deadpan performance. Hale is the best paragon because of her emotional performance. I do think Meer as a paragon is okay but Hale overacts as a renegade.

Hale's voice makes me sick. So high pitched, and no emotion. It really(seriously) gives me severe headaches and nausea to listen to Hale, and my doctor said I have a natural resistance to her horrible voice, and I should hear her as little as possible to avoid brain damage.

I dunno, Mark Meer always sounds to me like he really would rather be anywhere else than there. Every single line he sounds monotone and bored. Jennifer Hale does well with the renegade and funny lines especially, the only complaint I have with her is she always sounds a bit like she's got a stick up her butt, but she can act circles around Meer. At least she's actually interesting to listen to.

Meer sounds too monotone most of the time, but is better with Renegade lines.

Hale often goes over the top,but is better with romances.

Overall,I prefer Meer.

Hmmm... Hale's lines have always sounded fine to me. I think she has a bit more experience than Meer. Meer's lines sound a bit rushed sometimes. I don't know if the audio team speeds up his voice after he's recorded the lines to shorten scenes or if he actually reads that fast.. But sometimes it really throws the mood off for me. Also I do agree with the criticism that he sounds a bit monotonous at times. Still, he has a great voice and I can't imagine anyone else voicing ManSpep. No one's perfect.

The problem with her voice is that she talks slowly, and too softly.

Isn't that the definition of a typical woman's voice? What is she supposed to sound like? Female Hulk?

Ironically, Hale's performance of Shepard makes me think just that.

The toughness and semi-masculinity sounds way too forced, it doesn't feel natural.

I prefer Meer, even though he can sounds very bored at times.

I'm with you. I like Hale a lot, and she can hit highs/lows better than Meer, but Meer is understanably even-keel since, Shepard is a military commander. You get quite a few less "clunkers" from Meer. Hale can be too wistful, and then utterly unconvincing as a renegade.

I think Hale is a terrific VA (Bastila, Naomi Hunter) but her Shepard is pretty bad. She has this forced Jodie Foster thing going on and it just sounds annoying and unnatural.

I laughed at the forced Jodie Foster thing!

Hale is hands down better at showing emotion. With that said, she is erratic with her voice acting, and is highly inconsistent from line to line.(someone earlier pointed this out). Her voice when speaking to a certain squadmate (look at my pic) was terrible unless he was a LI. She had a case of jacob fever, regardless of whether you showed interest or not. I think that falls on the Voice actor's job, because it doesn't seem designed to be like that.

Because of that, Meer is better to me. Plus, you can't find a better d**k then a meer-voiced Shepard. He is like a sociopath.

Meer shines in general belivability for your normal, neural dialogue and is fairly good with renagade lines due to some good little bits of writing. Hale Is best when consistantly playing paragon/renagade, and kind of monotones some of the more generic lines.

Different people, different ways of trying to deal with acting the role of a character that will end up actually being an infinite number of different people making different decisions. Niether solution is perfect, but I think most of all you hear the fatigue. I have no idea how they conduct the recordings, but maybe they should throw more emphasis for having a good acting enviroment for them. Like have actors record thier lines in the same room, or give them a basket of redbulls.

I think Hale tried too hard in some instances to pull off "husky voiced badass ballbuster chick" and couldn't quite make it happen.

I can praise and criticize both. Meer was a bit wooden at times where Hale hit the emotional note better. Hale's lines were sometimes too forced sounding, as I mentioned above, but Meer often carried those lines quite well.

I still think both did a stellar job overall, however.

I have to say I like both equally but I agree that Meer has really improved his craft since ME1.
