I know that Fenris, Isabella and Carver/Bethany can leave the group, but what about the other characters? I've always gone along with companion quests just because I want the experience or item drops. Obviously Anders can be offed in the last quest, but can you do it earlier?
How many characters can be kicked out of the group or killed before the final quest? Is it possible to be forever alone, or will Avaline and Verric always be at your side?
How many characters can die, or leave the group?

All characters can die except Varric, Isabella, and Sebastian. Sebastian can leave at the end and Isabella can leave near the end of act 2. Varric is the only one who can't leave or be killed.

Anders is with you to the end. Or the end wouldn't make sense.
Aveline and Varric are bff.
Merrill? I don't know. Never seen a way for her to exit. Whether I sided with mages or templars, she always stayed in the end battle.

Anders can leave at the end of his quest in Act II but he still comes back for the fireworks display at the end. Aveline can leave at the end but I'm not entirely sure what the conditions are for that. Same goes for Merrill.

So if you don't have Sebastian DLC, you could essentially be just you and Varric when the final quest starts?

There's a lot of characters that will leave at the end. The question was, which characters can leave before the end?

Yeah, exactly.

According to the strategy guide, if Fenris leaves, Avelline will always stay. So that's you, Varric, and Avelline, if nothing else.

Technically, you can fight Merrill. I doubt it has been or ever will be done, though.

To a point all it mostly comes down to is some companions will need a certain threshold of Friendship/Rivalry depending on which side you take. As if it's hard to get that much approval with any of them. Key is just choosing a path for each enough so they're at least in the 75-100 range. Not really hard. The only hard part part is Isabela's Rivalry before To Catch a Thief. Which is still easy to do.

I did a playthrough where I was down to just Varric, Aveline, Fenris, and Merril. I noticed that with such a small party, lots of other characters come in to the final battle against Meredith to help make up the numbers - I spotted Zevran, Donnic, and Nathaniel Howe all fighting, whereas none of them showed up in the game where the only character I lost was Sebastian.

In a single walkthrough:
1. Isabela can ditch you during the end of Act II.
2. You can force Anders to leave after Act II, but he comes back in the end. Sebastian can leave if you don't kill Anders. But, you can shoo Anders away and Sebastian will walk away as well - taking two characters out.
3. If you side with the mages, either Aveline or Fenris can leave. (If you have forgotten to recruit Fenris, Aveline will leave if your rivalry meter with her is high enough.)
4. If you side with the templars, Merrill may leave.
5. And of course, if you have a sibling that died, that counts against you as well.
So, the smallest possible party you can have in the end is something like this, assuming that you didn't recruit Fenris:
Hawke
Varric
Aveline/Merrill
