I just started watching Lost, and I noticed that Commander Shepard and Jack Shephard have a lot of similarities, and not just the name.  They look very similar, and have a similar way of talking (short, to the point, authority in voice).  Here's a picture of Jack Shephard for those who don't know what I'm talking about:

I do know that Shepard was modeled by Mark Vanderloo, but was any inspiration for Cmdr. Shepard drawn from Jack Shephard from LOST?  Or are the similarities a complete coincidence?

Official confirmation either way would be nice.

(EDIT): I lrn how 2 post pics

I'll be serious now. I don't think so. Shepard was based on Mark Vanderloo, he wasn't based on Jack.

That said, LOST is a decent show. It's definitely out there, but it's good.

Yeah yeah I know he was modeled by Mark Vanderloo.... buuuut... to me the similarity in name, appearance, and personality makes quite the coincidence.

Anyway hope some Bioware employee can either confirm or shoot me down, but I'd like to know.

I recall reading some time ago, that they were inspired by an actual person, not a fictional character from LOST.

I think it was an astronaut, but unsure at this point.

He also has a lot in common with John Shepard from SG: Atlantis...not just in name either.

there is a number of threads done months ago kicking around that have gone through these, and there were some great debates and ideas. But they were so long ago. I don't think I can find them. Meh.

I think they drew inspiration from lots of different places...but Id' heard the astronaut one as well.

Alan Shepard was the first American in space. I'm pretty sure Bioware has said the name was taken from him.

Alan Shepard and Commander Shepard have 'Shepard' spelled the same, as opposed to "Shepherd."

So I'm guessing the astronaut.

I do not think Mark Vanderloo was inspired by Lost.

Woot! Shot down! Still, (younger) Matthew Fox would have been a good candidate to play Shepard in a (hopefully never to be realized) Mass Effect movie

I don't know, there was some weird time travel stuff in that show. Anything is possible.

Let's be honest, Shepard (and the spelling variations) is a popular name for characters. Hell, a Defender in the West Coast Eagles AFL team is called Shepard, it's not that uncommon.

If we were looking at characters, I'd say the closest would have to be Major/Lt. Colonel Shepard from Stargate Atlantis. Not sure if he'd be the best person to play Cdr. Shepard in the movie (a bit too much of a smartarse) but the characters are strikingly similar.
