David Gaider wrote about the costs of implementing content:
<Quote>
"The truth is that making a romance available for both genders is far less costly than creating an entirely new one."
<end of quote>

I personally would rather see different content (e.g. more options in particular situations) than romances, which  I do only if they provide an advantage in the game other than a mere achievement.
I want to emphasize, that this is only my attitude concerning this subject. There is no criticism attached to it towards all the gamers who want romances.

My question:

If it "far less costly", shouldn't the money be invested

1) into more background, e.g. if the player is a blood mage, Templars and others would react differently
2) more quests, more options to solve them

or

do you think that romances MUST be in every modern RPG?

Yes. In fact, we should have threesomes *stares at Merril and Fenris evilly*

But seriously, romance is always a fun diversion and makes sense when people are together for so long going through what they do.

Romances are really popular with many, although I can understand why some may not think the are needed.

But it certainly does add to the whole RPG immersion thing when one is playing their character.

Romances add a lot to games. Love and death are both a part of life. It gives you a more personal stake for saving the world.

Miss out on throwing fenris against the wall? NEVER! How much could it have cost to render that epic smirk?

Quite honestly... if Bioware nixed romances from their games I would not buy them.  Frankly, the characters are the strong point of these games and the interactions that can occur is why I replay these games.  If the romance option with certain characters were not present, such as Leliana or even Merrill, I would have never played Origins or DA2 a second time.  Hell, I might have stopped playing before finishing since the story would lose any emotional appeal to me.  I care about the story because I can care about the characters... and do so differently with each playthrough too.

In every modern crpg? No. In every Bioware crpg - Yes. (because they tend to do them best)

Romances add a level of investment in the characters and story that more background material wouldn't replace. There are enough companies out there who either ignore this aspect or only pay minimal attention to it - if Bioware dropped this aspect of its gameplay I would be devastated. (to the extent I could be devastated by anything that happened in the video game market)

Romances should be used properly (adding substance to the story as a whole) - the way they're implemented in nearly all games (sophomoric titilation) - no.

Given the amount of trouble they seem to cause I would suggest keeping them well out of the picture...

Yes let's make a game to please absolutely everyone.
We'd probably end up with Pong. Though I'm sure 3 lines and a moving dot offends somebody somewhere.

Romances add replay value to them.
You can experience a friendship and romance, just to see the different dialogue options at least.
Should they all be romancable?  Meh.  I find myself respecting some characters just because they're not romancable.  But....*shrug* why not have the romances in?

I'd argue that yes they should be part of any half decent RPG. The reason for me is immersion. If i'm trying to immerse myself as being a character you need a to be able to experience the full gamut of human emotions. I'm less interesting in having a million side quests and would much prefer richer companion and romance stories.

They wouldn't have to be if your character is a robot or an asexual being. Although, what's the point of making it an RPG if you're not going to explore the human side of the characters? It adds more of a human aspect to it and makes the characters seem more multidimensional. If all other relationships are implemented except for romances, it would be just as glaringly obvious as the lack of certain details in DA2 that could've helped to flesh out the game a bit more.

Given their timetable/resources, prioritizing romances instead of other details makes sense. Although it could've been a more complete game with an extended timetable/resources.

Pretty much this.

I understand that romances don't appeal to everyone, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be included if the time and resources at hand allow it.

Making every romance available for each gender was a nice touch and something I hope to see in future games as well.

My main complaint with Elder Scrolls is just how empty it feels when playing it. All those beautiful vistas and... no one.. not a soul to "experience" it with....

I would never have bought DA2 if I hadn't known Bioware would throw a good romance my way. So yes, if they want my girl gamer dollars, give me some emotional substance.

No.

We don't need combat either and it's far more of a resource drain. Remove it, and you'd have much more room for quests 'n crap.

I didn't really care for the DA2 romances. The only one that was mildly interesting to me was the Isabela romance. All the other ones are forgettable.

Correction: three WHITE lines and a moving dot ... obviously Pong is racist.

Must?  No.  I play a fair number of RPG's that I really like which contain no romances at all.  I'd be even happier if they didn't all contain a female prostitute for the male lead to get busy with.  (Honestly WHAT IS WITH THE REQUIRED BROTHEL THING.  SHEESH.)

That being said, I quite enjoy the romances and like having them.  There are lots of things that you CAN leave out.  Side quests.  Conversations between party members.  The protagonist having actual dialog options.  However, if Bioware starts leaving this stuff out, what will they have left that makes them unique?  They don't do the best graphics or combat or area design or open world.

Did you see any boobies? No. It's because Pong is sexist too!

Agree. I'm not saying I don't enjoy separating darkspawn limbs from their owners, and I don't claim to know where or how their resources were spent in the combat v. companions department, but DA would be a different, less enjoyable game without romances. And the quests did seem like they could have stood to have had a little more money and time thrown their way.
