I have not played on myself yet but is the knockback/knockdown immunity not needed? Mind you I have only beat the game once on Normal.

If your hero is a warrior, there are far FAR better skills to use points on, and if your tank is Avaline, her special tree is far better than the defender tree.

The skills in the tree mostly suck, and the passive talents like +5% damage reduction and 100% knockback immunity are easily replaced by items or better skill trees.

It's just really really mediocre.

The upgraded stonewall is extremely good (although unupgraded will do if you already have 50% damage reduction). Cycle that with taunt to hold aggro and bolster to keep up your stamina and you can live extremely long .

The elemental protection sustain is good for a lot of fights as well.

The Upgraded Stonewall is awesome, get all the monsters after your warrior, use stonewall then trigger a walking bomb.

Elemental Aegis is also one of my favorites, with a couple of runes you can become immune to fire, ice and spirit, basically negating any friendly fire from Firestorm, Cone of Cold or Walking Bomb.

As for Turn the Blade, the +20 Fortitude upgrade has it's uses, on Nightmare there was a few enemies and bosses that could stagger my warrior (just), TtB negated that, my warrior actually did most of the damage against the Ancient Rock Wraith. The defense boost was also an important part in my Cun build Fenris.

Elemenal Aegis paired with runes for nearly 100% resists to magic across the board. Stonewall is ok, knockback resistence is also very nice especially when you play 2 handed warrior where it happens alot and is preventing you from doing damage.

Stonewall - It's great, except that the character using it is immobile for the (very short) duration of the effect. Basically, you're trading the ability to generate threat for the ability to survive. If you can see the attack coming, that's great. If you can't, it's about as useful as a hole in the head.

Elemental Aegis - Not a bad skill. It allows you to increase your Elemental Resistance on demand, and without requiring you to screw around with your Runes or equipment to do it. It's not the greatest spell, but it could be worse.

Turn the Blade - Useful in early levels, when you're focusing points on Constitution and Strength for equipment. After meeting requirements, you can start focusing points into Cunning, so this isn't needed quite as badly. Frankly, I'd rather just kill things, but Turn the Blade is nice for those who prefer Defense Tanks.

Resilience - Knockback Immunity is nice, but can be gotten from equipment, so it's not needed. If you have the points to spare, feel free to invest the three points minimum needed to get it; however, respec out of it once you get the Etched Ring of the Twins. This way, you get the benefit of the Knockback Immunity earlier.

Adamant - Personally, I think there's better things to spend points on. The amount of damage reduced is only going to be a point or two, so there's no overwhelming reason to get this.

Resolute - Frankly, I've not found Mage's to be the major threat that they were in Origins. The only exception I've found is the Saarebas Mage's. Then again, I play on Normal, so my perspective is skewed; they may actually be a threat on higher difficulties. Regardless, I don't find a mere 10% resistance to be worth it. However, when paired with the Templar's 50% resistance, it suddenly looks a lot more appealing.

That's my take on each of the Defender Talents.

Because classic tanking sucks in this game. Threat doesn't work very well and taunt does crap nothing for keeping squishy mages alive.

I have Fenris and Aveline use Elemental Aegis and Stonewall when they hit 10% so I have a little more time if I'm not paying attention. If you're on the ball, I think you can safely ignore the tree... So I definitely use some of it.

Stonewall is useful if you can time it for an Ogre Smash/Meredith Smite/Dragon Breath.

As for the other skills, Battle Tempo(Fenris)/Blood Frenzy(Hawke) makes any other tanking/defensive ability obsolete, and Aveline of course has a spec tree superior to the Defender tree in every way.
