 I kind of screwed this one up unintentionally.

I saw the altar had a quest, I took the quest and removed my armor.  I received a bag of ashes, or at least I had one in my inventory after that.  I clicked the altar again, put the armor back on, and ran out, quick saving in case the cult leader decided to attack me.  I ran all the way back to the Brother, who seemed to think I did not have the ashes.  So back I went- only the quest is gone, and if I run across the fire with our without my armor equipped, the guardian appears and attacks me.  There appear to be no conversational options out of this, and I really didn't want to kill him.  (Not to mention, I'm not entirely sure my party can kill him.)

Is there any way out of this or am I just screwed?  I changed areas several times, so the auto-saves are useless, and as mentioned I quick saved afterwards.  I've been working on this quest for hours, I think I"m about ready to scream, I am so frustrated.  >_<

Lesson: Save a lot while multiple saves. Learn this quick, even the loading screen tells you that.
