Guys, rogues are highest melee DPS in game

Here's current stats (no item mods included,.. these are base stats when naked). I've got the various +bonus stats from the 'certain' place in the story line (don't want to include spoiler).
Human Noble
20 strength (for best leather)
42 Dexterity (wish I stopped at 40)
36 Cunning
15 Willpower
14 Magic
15 Constitution
32% crit chance on both daggers with 14 armor penetration (Cunning raises armor penetration - another huge factor for damage later in game.. cus enemies have thick armor later on).
Wielding 1 dagger that gives +30% crit/backstab damage (forgot it's name) and another dagger that gives +10% crit/backstab damage.. and gloves that give +10% backstab damage... +50% extra crit/backstab damage total.
This is a pure dagger rogue on Nightmare diffculty... I do far more damage than any of my other melee characters (and sometimes more overall damage than my best dps mage).
How / why? Simple. Rogue Lethatility (use cunning for damage instead of strength) Assassin specialization with the talent that increases backstabs (and criticals) by an amount based on cunning (the bonus is massive if you pump cunning).
Activate the dual-weapon talent called Momentum (increases attack speed by a huge amount.. you lose stamina with each swing, but it's small).
My rogue can crit/backstab against heavily armored enemies for 45-50 damage per hit... by comparison, Sten with his huge 2 hander hits for about 70 per hit... however, with momentum my rogue lands 4 hits in the time it takes Sten to swing once... that's close to 200 damage in the time it takes Sten to swing once. Not even my mages can do this much damage in such a short time span.
Rogues survive better than warriors (this is borked but it's true) at end game (vs melee/ranged.. not spellcasters)... why? Evasion talent + High dexterity means I seldom get hit by attacks.... There's a certain dragon in the game (won't spoil what/who)... my rogue tanked it solo for 2 minutes before he died.. by Comparison when I tried to tank with Alistair or Sten, they died in under 30 seconds.... Evasion lets you have a flat 20% chance to avoid any attack.. then the enemy still has to get past your very high defense score (thanks to rogue's high Dex).
Even when I can't get behind an enemy to backstab, my crit chance is 32% and I'm swinging so fast that I'm constantly landing devastating critical hits (+ bleeding from assassin talent + bleeding from dual wield talent).
Yes, early on Rogue is very lack luster in damage.. but by level 12 my rogue was quite powerful... now at 16, it's far more powerful than any warrior or mage I've ever made (I have a 17 warrior and 15 mage character as well).
Rogue is very dependent on the right daggers / gear though.. perhaps more so than warriors.. you have to get +backstab/critical damage daggers (there's an amazing one.. best in game I think.. for sale in Orzimar, but I think it costed me 120 gold).

Hathur theres a 'Thorn of the dead God' thread in the spoilers section if your only level 16 check it out you might be able to pull it off, one of the weapons is the 120 gold one i believe yet nobody whos commented so far has managed to get all three to see if its quest related. If you saved enough gold try give it a go.

This rogue is on PC, yeah?
Why wouldn't the pc have it?
I started out with an elf rogue. I just have her on the sword and shield and use her as a tank.
I honestly don't know how to use a rogue. Perhaps I will try to do it properly on my next playthroughs.

I've already seen the tendency off this when I decided to let Leilianna go the dual wield way. And she's got a rather gimped start at it due to her archer talents, once I started getting her up in the levels with the key talents and added assassin to her she started to deal out some serious damage. My next play-through is a rogue guaranteed.

No, as the dexterity hotfix wouldn't matter anyway since I'm dependent on cunning for damage (Lethality + the assassin talent that adds bonus damage from cunning).
The dexterity hotfix would make life easier for rogues prior to lethality and the assassin specialization though, I suspect.

Lethality only replaces the STR modifier, but theoretically there should also be a DEX modifier in there too. Thats what the hotfix fixes. Essentially with the hotfix your rogue would be even better than now.

Won't the hotfix gimp a rogue under some circumstances? It changes daggers to 50%/50% STR/DEX rather than 100% STR. My current rogue (I call him a burglar which unfortunately is not a specialization) has Lethality and something like 30 DEX, 40 CUN. So, without the hotfix he has bonus +30 (all from CUN) but with hotfix that would be +25 (average of +30 from CUN and +20 from DEX). Please correct me if I'm totally wrong...
It works differently than your thinking it does. Basically daggers are already 50/50 between STR and DEX, but without the hotfix they are not getting that DEX modifier. Lethality turns that STR mod into a CUN mod, but your still missing out on that DEX mod. The hotfix will always make your rogue better, but it will also make enemy rogues and archers better as well.

Actually my mage (female) got him to teach his specialization at roughly 25 approval, maybe even less. No idea if the character's gender means anything though.

All I see are crits.
I mean, I'd go as far as to say,
so long as you have a tank and a healer,
you'll hands down have no problem with many fights because of the rogue's insane swiftness of depleting enemy health.
