I don't know what's the point having mage standing in corner, buffing and doing defensive actions. To defeat enemies you need to kill them and that requires damage.

You must not be a big RPGer. Group members tend to fill specific roles, and are often expected to avoid actions that are counter to the objectives of that role. A healer, in order to avoid aggro, will often be restricted from attacking. In lots of MMOs, if you're a healer that starts nuking enemies people will get on your case because you're putting the group at risk.

I have played many mmorpgs for maybe 9 years and I know all about group dynamic and how different person in groups have different roles. Most the time the roles are, tank, DPS, healer, controller/buffer/debuffer, depending mmorpgs. How ever, the different is what in those mmorpgs the class is design to be just one kind, but in DA2 mages can be build anyway you like, meaning you can have combination of different roles in one mage.

Point is, it's all about what difficulty you play. DA2 isn't mmorpg, hole dynamic how combat works, classes can be build and spells work, is different. You can try to force you self in mmorpg dynamic as clear roles, but DA2 class builds for mages are different. Example healing is very slow in DA2 as long cool down and most mages damage spells have inbuild control effect.

Healing isn't slow with martyr. MMO or singleplayer doesn't matter, only the mechanics presented and how you utilize them. Many MMOs lack clear roles as well, Warcraft is a great example of this. Every one of the healing classes has the option to spec more aggressively.

If I may ask, what spells would you focus on for a glass cannon Anders?

The only abilities you need to focus on are Elemental Mastery and Galvanism. With those two, you end up with everything else you would need by default.

Multipliers are the real power behind damage, not the damage abilities themselves.(ever seen a warrior dish out amazing damage without cleave, blood frenzy, or the damage multiplier from CCC?)

No, but four point in Arcane are a requirement for Arcane Fortress, aka the upgrade that makes Barrier worthwhile.  It's fine if you want to roll with Anders as your only mage and split his focus, but between him, Merrill, and mage Hawke, he's easily the worst at offense.

Actually, Anders can become the best offensive mage in the game, even beating out Hawke. (unless Hawke wears the Robes of Cleanliness)  Merril has nothing that can beat +30% damage and -20% cooldowns.

Anders is the only mage capable of a true "glass cannon" build via his Vengeance ability.
(A basic mage actually makes the second best tank in the game with just rock armor and some points in constitution, hence; mage hawke and merril can never be "glass" unless you're gimping yourself on purpose.)

friendship + Veangece = faceroll

you really should quit with the few chips you still have.

I could break it down but it is early still and I have yet to have my coffee.

Oh, please do explain.

All that +damage and cooldown reduction to do... what?  His specialization tree spends so much time on buffs that it forgets entirely to actually give him any damage spells worth a damn.  He's got Chain Lightning, Walking Bomb, and maybe Winter's Grasp. That's it.

Merrill actually has a (somewhat watered down) Blood Mage spec, which lets you forget about Willpower entirely and abuse her non-friendly-firing AoEs.  While she's running around with 300+ health, a 4:1 health/mana conversion rate, and 50% mana's worth of free sustained buffs, if Anders wants to use Vengeance he's taking double damage and giving up 20% of his mana, and that's before Rock Armor, Elemental Weapons, and/or Heroic Aura.  If you're dead set on making the glassiest cannon possible, Anders is your man, but that isn't necessarily a good thing.

Compared to mage Hawke, it's no contest.  Ignoring entirely all Hawke's skill and stat boosts, and the fact that Anders doesn't even get an armor rune slot until Act 3, Anders can't even come close to matching an upgraded Hemorrhage or Fist of the Maker on a group of staggered enemies.

Is he competent? Sure. Can you beat Nightmare with him as your only offensive mage? Of course. Is he a better nuker than Merrill or Hawke? Nope.

how quaint. your 2 examples you bring to compare physical damage. lol fist is weak, im sorry. 3 points for what boils down to a mild cc with a little damage sprinkled in. where is your double damage?

compare chain lightnings if anything...

where is your hawke finding 30% more damage from a 600% x 2 chain? not to mention anders is casting the stagger ccc every 16 seconds. twice the speed of hemo, before martyr spam.
