I've heard that some NWN2 modders are being contacted by a new site called GMod.com.  I looked it up and it appears to be trying to consolidate mods at one site.  It has been compared to ModDB.com.  Has anyone else heard about it?  What are your thoughts?

I was contacted today. They are in a beta and they are posting mods without explicit permission so that they have something in the site to look at. Looks like they are scraping content from the Vault pages. They say that when they end the beta they will remove any mods that have not been explicitly approved by their authors.

One nice thing about the vault is that on a single page you can post multiple files. Not sure if GMod pages allow that.

Regards

I bet that will go over real well with the mod community....   <_<

In fact, what mod do I see on there, but one I didn't authorize. And since I'm not a member, I can't complain since there is no contact info...

edit: also congratulations to Shaughn78, you're now apparently the author of PoE :P

HA-HA, it is mine now! Posted Image

This is a little bizarre, if it is just for beta testing that seems like a lot of work to post all those files. The biggest draw back will be having multiple files in different places. For NWN2 the vault is kind of the standard for community mods. If there are updates placed on the vault these unapproved versions will be out of date with potential bugs.

Well, they already are out of date on mine.

They sent me a message. I'm hesitant for the reasons stated above. The vault is an excellent centralized and well known source for NWN2 mods. I just don't see the benefit to putting my mods in 2 places.

This happened very often back when NWN2 first came out. It is good to see that other sites are still interested in posting NWN2 mods. I did a quick search for "Chronicles of Charnia" and my "Escape from Charn" and "The Exile" were posted on a number of sites back in 2006/07. None of those sites ever contacted me and the only way I found out was by a google seach. I only updated my work on The Vault (it easier for me to have one place) so if others wanted to post my work on their site, they needed to go to The Vault to get the updates. Most never did, so there are many different versions of Escape from Charn and The Exile out there ;-) None of the other sites received many downloads and most had no way to give feedback so I never kept track of them. Even though The Vault has its shortcomings, it is still the best place for my projects.

Is this an April's 1st joke?

Do they tell you your mod is amazing as well? I think it's an auto-generated mail. Found it in my junk folder. Still thinking about it. Maybe they could make a post here explaining it to the community?

I was contacted about the SOZ Holiday Project. I'm going to keep things on the vault--past and future projects--so that I have a better idea of what people want or are saying about then. I don't want things spread out.

On the matter of posting content without permission: I find that reprehensible.

Did anyone notice that the E-mail reads as: GMod inventation instead of invitation. Spelling fail or creative writing? Posted Image

Mine didn't have that "creative" spelling quirk. I bet Mr. Joyce is turning over in his grave. ^_^

I do have to come to their defense on the issue of permission and authorship: They pledge to remove any mod whose author isn't OK with it being published there.

Also they pre uploaded mostly the mods whose authors indicated they were okay with it being shared. Also, it's nice to see this kind of initative for the game.

It would have been a good idea for them to make a post explaining it on this forum though.

I am going to activate my account there, it looks like a neat site. The vault remains the central hub for me though, for now anyway.

36 hours after I received email that they would remove it asap, my mod is still there.

I did not.

Yes, and it would have. The date the mods were put on the site is listed, and it was mid-February.

I can't activate my account because I'm not listed as the author of my mod.

Well personally, I think more sites mean more exposure, except that in the case of NWN2, more sites mean more confused players, more bugs due to out-of-date content, and a scattered community.

Plus, I don't like the grabbing of content without permission thing, although that was mostly and oversite, and the site claims to fix that after the beta.

Also, congrats to Shaughn for his PoE mod! It's great! Kamal, you should really play his mod, you could get some building tips from him...

One would think a company with twelve employees could remove a mod from the site in less than 4 days, but apparently not.

I wish I saw this thread a couple days ago. This is Skylar Kreisher, CEO of Gmod.com. I'd like to begin a conversation with everyone here to try to clear up any mistakes we may have made and ensure everyone is happy moving forward.

Kamal_ I'm sorry for taking so long to get your mod removed. When you emailed me I forgot to forward it to a content manager right away. I don't normally get email from community in my personal inbox. I personally removed the mod earlier this week. Also - I don't know why another developer was being credited for your mod. We try VERY hard to give credit where credit is due and never ment to disrespect you. If you'd like to try the site out - we would love to have you. Just let me know and I'll forward a beta key your way.

I dont see why anyone would put a vault mod up and NOT want it shared in other websites. Whats the point?

That said its not my issue to discuss since they didnt like my campaign I think ;)

Whats the name of your mod Eguintir? If you're interested in checking out the site I can send you a beta key.

Kreisher, could you explain a little about the purpose of your site?

My only point of comparison is Moddb - which has forums, dev blogs, user galleries (video, and so on), user blogs, project groups, development "clubs) (3d group, scripter group, concept art group, etc.) and the obligatory content dump for all the mods and downloads...

Gmod appears to be a content dump - what's your angle? Also, it looks like you're only focusing on rpgs... deliberate?

Kreisher - another question:
One of the main issues mentioned above is re keeping the mods on your site up to date. Some of us may be unwilling/unable to keep 'their' files updated on more than one site - so if we keep our files current on the vault, will your people be able to keep the Gmod versions current too?

Cly.

My campaign is in my sig. I dont need a beta key just download it and use the crap out of it if you want.

All you need is the big .7z file for your site.
You can take the video trailer if u want but the small patch file is obsolete for the latest version (and final one).
