Did your teachers and/or guidance counsilors ever help you? My youngest brother is dealing with a bullying problem and according to him, his teachers act like everything is fine even when people are being verbally bullied right in front of them. I grew up pretty short and this was an issue for me back in grade school, especially when my teachers kept assuring "everything will be fine...don't worry...you'll get through it". Maybe it's because I was in containment classes for most of my time. They'll put you in with ANYBODY in those settings.

Teachers don't care about bullied kids. I'm sorry to say that but the only way you can stop it is by standing for yourself (see the takedown kid from Australia)

I think most teachers just don't want the hassle of dealing with every students problems on top of all the marking and other stuff they have to do. Guidence Coucilors range from good to shoddy in my case it was the latter and he would just sort of not listen to what i said and tell me to just ask the bullies why they were doing it. Which would just earn me an even bigger kicking in the bathroom these girls were not the type that were going to be my friend because i was all "why you pick on me? woe is me i did nothing to you"

bullied from 1st grade all the way til 9th, and every year I moved an was put into a different school - I dropped out after 9th. Teachers NEVER helped nor stopped the pricks, an if I fought back, THAT's when the teachers would intervene.
It's like the rule is: kid is bullying another kid, do nothing. But if the bully gets attacked, then step in. Now act like an idiot an ask "Who started the fight".
Schools need teachers that actually give a damn about their job as a guide to the kids they teach, and the kids that act as bullies should be sent to Juvie.

I was bullied in grade school and yes the best teachers would do is say "Just stay away from them." which is rather difficult since bullies tend to gravitate towards the conflict.

I had to take matters into my own hands and finally beat the guy up (I more or less snapped from the abuse).  Never bothered me again after that and I got respect from other people for doing it.  I didn't like what I did however but in the end no ne was willing to help solve the problem.

We were left to fend for ourselves unless blood was drawn.  I'm sure it was deemed "character building." Image IPB

Tell him to deal with it.

I dealt with several bullying issues in middle school, usually along these lines:

1.) idiots trying to look tough relying on my self-control not to hurt them (bad idea!)

2.) Me saying horrid things to people

3.) Getting in trouble for running people over in gym class

4.) Hiding people's crutches

5.) Reminding stupid people how stupid they are

But if your brother is having trouble with bullying, his best move would be to send the bully home with a black eye and a split lip. Call it mean, confrontational, etc.. but it will get the job done better than any other option. Getting the teachers to stand up for you is just fuel for the bullies. Talking back to the bullies will more likely continue the situation then end it. Don't worry about the possibility of injuries either, as most of those bullies are weaklings anyway.

Here is an example for you: Several years ago, when I was in middle school, this kid would sit there and give me lip for countless hours. He was a relatively small, frail kid. One day, I finally lost my temper with him. So, in class I picked him up and shook him violently while screaming at him.

Never gave me problems again. ;)

My brother himself isn't as strong as most people.

It helps if you know a bunch of relatively strong guys that will kill the kid who tries to lay a hand on you. But your bro is not a girl, is he? I guess I can't help you....

You know what? Your brother should just fight this bully. Schools will only do something when a fight breaks out. Trust me, it happened to me in middle school. Your brother might get in trouble (which is BS) but at least something will change.

Rats. That incident was in 7th grade, and I was 5'11" and 180 lbs in 7th grade.

But if he doesn't have strength, he can still fight. He must go for quick jabs to the face, preferably nose+mouth area. If he wants bullies to leave him alone, he MUST cause some sort of physical or psychological harm to a bully. However, he must not be too underhanded or sneaky about it, as this will attract others to continue where the injured bully left off.

Tell him fight one of the bullies. He shouldn't  try to make a show (that's what the bullies are doing), he should try to leave the bastard in pain whether he wins or loses. If the bully has to ice his face for several hours, he may be a bit more reluctant to start with your brother.

when I was in middle school I was bullied BY one of my teachers, just because she had a problem with my family.
and she even did it right in front of the other teachers. none of them even bothered saying a word in my defense.

Just tell him to fight back. If he doesn't, it will only get worse. Teacher can't be there 24/7.

Bullying is a hobby for some kids. A swift kick to gut will encourage them to take up a new hobby.

Would it be better to simply continue to take it? At least by getting all the pent up aggression out someone might realize that it's a problem.

Hmph, perhaps. It all falls down to what school you go to it seems, so to the OP what kind of school does your brother go to some trashy school or some run of the mill school?

I'm sorry, but you should take talk like that to a backwater hippie commune where such idiocy belongs.

I personally have never been bullied but I think that if a teacher sees a kid being beaten up they'd probably intervene...at least I hope.

Oh they'll see there is a problem. But they won't do anything.

Depends on what grade he's in. A senior in highschool? ok, maybe, when someone really big can put a dent in your face. If he's in grade school, I say go for it. It's part of growing up. There are times when not standing up for yourself makes things worse in the long run. You are with the same bunch of kids for years when going through school, and once a reputation is 'earned', it's hard to shake it. My nephew is going through this too, and already he's been in a couple fights.
