From what I've heard, that is what happened with the testers.  Most if not all went back and changed whatever was necessary to save her.

That's interesting. Though doesn't taking out the option mean that people who would have done this will now reload an earlier save, and in VAIN explore all the possibilities, only to find that the mother dies anyway? How is that better?

Personally, in my first playthrough, I did not reload unless my whole party died in a battle - I went with every choice I made, even though the results were quite horrid sometimes.

After having my mother turned into Frankenstein, and being forced to slaughter the Dalish tribe after picking an option that was not "I take responsibility for this", I do have to say that I was kinda  and :crying:.

The death of Hawke's mother is obviously a plot device, and I don't mind it. Not because I didn't like her, but because I know it was needed to move the plot along. I gives you an almost perfectly understandable reason to become an unofficial Templar, and the way that unfolds when you and Bethany meet in the Gallows is a highlight for me. Mom's death actually made me feel bad, which is a GOOD thing, considering most NPC deaths in RPGs are pretty meaningless.

If you could originally save her but it was removed for the stated reason that too many people reloaded to save her, then I don't see how it is necessary. I don't see how it pushed the plot at all. It was an aside, and not a particularly good one to me. Likewise, it didn't give people who viewed Quentin as a lunatic rather than a mage any just cause to become a templar or sympathize with templars.

Admittedly I would like to see Bethany's scene now because Carver's scene was terribly unmoving.

There's a reason stories get revisions and go through drafts. Just because the authors wrote something down and then decided it wouldn't work like they intended doesn't mean that the original idea's existance somehow invalidates the final version.

If the reason given for it being cut wasn't because too many players chose to save her, then in this case I might believe you Vormaerin.
