The kind of villain we REALLY need in DA3 or expansions

However, unknown is fun. The reason Joker is a great villain is not because he's evil for the sake of being evil, although he might appears to be such character. The greatest charm of Joker is the unknown, we know very little about him and he's always been unpredictable. We never know what he'd do next, he doesn't have a known purpose (or he exist to torment Batman), he doesn't want to conquer the world, but he never comes out as shallow, because the character is introduced in such way that the reader know there's more to it.
So yeah, if Bioware can pull of a character like the Joker, I won't mind having a villain that's completely chaotic evil. We have too many lawful evil villains.

Loghain was nowhere near. He seemed an enormous ****, but in the end, he was really trying to protect Fereldan.
Thats actually why Loghain worked well for me. You're in two minds whether or not to go up against him, rather than it being a cut and dry "Oh, X is evil and has to die".

I'd be even happier with chaotic neutral.

I want to see whoever is working against Flemeth. I'm pretty sure he/she/it/they, by virtue of counteracting Flemeth, is outside the realm of hero/villian.
Alternatively, a Magneto type villian (before he became hitler-esque), one who's goals you understand and sympathize with but disagree with the means used to obtain them. (I don't think Logain falls in that category, but that's probably for another thread)
I see Anders as that type of villain; the one who says there is no way the common folk will accept us so we must fight violently for our well being because no one else will. There are many similarities between mutants in x men and mages in dragon age. Feared because of what they are and "the cure"/tranquility come to mind first and foremost.

Agreed. Chaotic neutral would be more unperdictable, set up a chain of event just to see what's going to happen and how people make choices under extreme circumstances, that would be a great storyline. LOL, it's a social experiment.

Again, it's not like there haven't been downright, no justification evil characters in these games. I challenge you to try and justify Howe's actions.
Howe gets a pass. He's voiced by Tim Curry. Anybody voiced by Tim Curry must be EVIL. Not his fault.

He was traumatized over his son's obvious skin deformities?

Fine. I want the Maker as the villain. That bastard needs to pay.

There are about 10,000 existing JRPGs where you kill God. Let's be more original.

No I just like pointing out that JRPGs have you kill God.

The villain should be a brutal, cunning, wild card. He/she is not insane, merely extremely unpredictable. One moment he/she might save you from falling to your death to further his/her own goals. Next time you two meet, the villain will stab you in the eye with a rusty fork.

I knew/felt loghain was evil from the moment he was introduced. I tried reading the stolen throne to gain some perspective/sympathy/understanding of the character and it didn't work.

Someone more "human", so to speak. Maybe the Dragon of someone such as Loghain.GSSAGE7 wrote...

I would be down for that if you could chose to be her ally as well as choose to oppose her.
Hint: I would never oppose her.

However, I do like the fact that if you spared him, he's then a fugly looking companion who may or may not get to have sexy times with Morrigan.

True, Howe passes well.
I had Cousland origins, and when he slaughtered my family, it pissed me off big time. Add to the fact that for majority of the game he was completely untouchable, while I imagine how he sits on a throne of my family's stolen treasure after torturing mom and dad.
It made me really satisfied when I could finally sink my blade into him.
I want such villians in DA3. The one who's so evil and yet powerful you simply cannot touch him, only look at him in rage, then it all comes to a sweet conclusion where you finally have his neck in your hands.
