Got a quest "A New Path" in Act 3 to speak to Merrill in her house.

She starts crying about how Marethari is gone, confusing the hell out of me. Dialog ends, she has a quest. I click her, and she tells me she wants to finish the Eluvian mirror.

My understanding is the game bugged out and showed me the end dialog of the quest before I even started it. Thinking that was odd, I proceed to do the quest. I did A New Path, killed Marethari, fought off the entire Dalish camp, etc.

However, there was no ending dialog. The quest is no longer in my journal. For all intents and purposes, the quest finished itself right after I fought of the initial Dalish elves after leaving the cave.

Here's the problem:
Merrill is LOCKED into my party, has the lock icon and all. The game must think I'm still on that quest, because I can't remove her from the party or anything. As I don't use her much, and would love to get my man varric back, this is driving me nuts.

Pretty major bug, imo. Anyone know a way around this?

tl;dr - Can't remove Merrill from party since doing her quest.

Try loading a previous save otherwise there is a save editor or something like that but I don't know anything about it so then another have to tell you how to do it.

It's sadly a pretty common problem. Try entering a scenario which "locks" another character, like another companions sidequest. That should fix it.

Also: go home. That removes everyone from the party, and I've heard it works the same way with this issue.

Does anyone know if there's a way to force the end cutscene to play again? I can make the quest activate fine after the bugged ending, but I want to see the ending in the proper order...

I looked into that, via dev console etc. and the answer is not that I know of.

I got this bug too, one has to wonder what type of QA was done on this title given that there are so many serious bugs that one can encounter on a regular playthrough without any weird userpath...

In any case doing the quest in the broken state (ending first) has repercussions for future dialogues or somesuch relating to merrill? or does the game continues as normal?

Same thing happened to me, but she wasn't "locked" in my party. I'm aggrevated that after killing her keeper and her entire clan there is no dialogue. The quest dissapears in active quests, and shows up in completed quests (and Merrill gains a pretty good staff out of it), but no follow-up dialogue with Merrill in her home, or anywhere else. The mirror is still in her house, but when I attempt to talk to her, all I get is how her roof leaks, or how her house is clean sometimes (honest).

This! I helped her finish the mirrior and kill all those elves, but nothing else happened with the mirror. Is something else supposed to happen?

This happened to me to, but with one strange caveat. Before going on the quest, I got the rivalry cut-scene with Merrill where

Spoilers

she kicks you out of her house.

/Spoilers

After that cutscene, I went straight to Sundermount. Now here's the thing: On coming back, the quest behaves the same way for me. Once I went back to my house, though, Merrill was there for the romance cut-scene. If I romance her, the next time I go to her house, I get the dialogue/cut-scene for the end of A New Path. If I choose not to romance her, I do not. This is odd because, from what I understand, if you romance her before starting the quest, the quest has a high chance of bugging in a very different way. It seems to me there is some connection.
