If you import a dead Warden into Awakening, they're retconned into being alive, and you'll start with your gear.
Otherwise you start-up an Orlesian Warden with a default storyline and some start-up gear.

Yep. This is to spare you having to go to an old save and do the final battle again (or, if you're a female Warden romancing Alistair, the entire DENERIM SIEGE all over again, as you CAN'T sacrifice yourself in that situation).

I'm still curious as to what the cannon ending is. I'd rather my Warden sacrifice himself to slay the Archdemon, but I can't help but feel like in the cannon ending he is supposed to live.

Don't think there is one. If you don't import a game into DA2, you can choose from three default beginnings: 1) Ritual done (no deaths) 2) Ultimate sacrifice by a dalish elf or 3) Loghain dies as the redeemer.Darkshore wrote...

If you import an orelsian, it will carry over the Awakening (and Witch Hunt if you have it) data, but it will fill in the blank origins data with the first default ("Hero of Ferelden," meaning ritual was done by Cousland with Alistair as the ruler) on the list.
So if you want to sacrifice your warden, go ahead and do that. Import into DA2 from there. Lack of Awakening will mean you'd miss a cameo or two, but it's not a dealbraker. It will still acknowledge the warden died.

There is no canonin DA. The only canon there is, is what you consider to be your own personal canon.
So if sacrificing your Warden feels like the right thing to do, do so.
