Till the moment I didn´t have any issues with Mass Effect 2. After instaling Arrival, I have sudden falls in framerate (it feels like lag, slowing down the game and making it unplayable) for seamingly no good reason.

After some time, seems like the framerate gets back to normal but then again, it falls down after some time.

I am using an Asus G71 with the 266.66 gforce drivers on a 9700m GT card.

Same problem here. Persistent stuttering making the game unplayable.

The 266.66 drivers are not the best for ME2, especially on an older card like yours. Try reverting to 258.96.

I reverted to very old drivers (179.48) and seems to work far better.

I will try as suggested too.

The best driver I can recommend for Mass Effect 2 is the 197.45 driver. The 197 release included anti-aliasing support in the nVidia control panel, so it was made with Mass Effect 2 in mind. Also it was made before the Geforce 400 series of graphics cards were released, and all the changes they brought to the drivers. But the 258.96 driver works as well.

I don't know if my problem is related to this thread, but it suits "poor performance" as well, so i write it here instead of opening a new one.

Before Arrival, with all DLC, drivers up to date and DX ok, Mass Effect 2 was running very smoothly on my PC.

Problem with Arrival now is that my loading screen ( mass relay and normandy filling green ) between missions, landing on planets or loading saves are MUCH longer than before. Like 3 to 4 times longer, repeating the cycle. And this happens on DLC solar system as well as old ME2 playthrough...

Anyone having the same problem ?

I've seen people report this after installing just about any DLC, but I haven't heard of any consistent pattern or solution emerging.

I have tried using the 185.85 drivers and the 257.21. The problem stays the same.

Maybe it has something to do with Arrival.

I have that too. It is closely related to Core Affinities. I take it you have a multicore CPU. Take a look at this: www.theplaywrite.com/tools-and-utilities/massaffinity-v0-2-released/ and see how it works. Dealt with the loading time problem for me just fine.

Those are not the drivers I recommended.  I said either the 197.45 drivers or 258.96 drivers.

The issue stays the same. I made sure I downloaded the 258.96 and installed them. No changes on the freezing.

I´ll try unistalling all the nvidia soft I have and reinstall the 258.96 again.

Done; I have unistalled all the drivers and installed the 258.96. The performance is slightly better. Now the freezes do not prevent the interface from showing the interactive elements. However, the game still goes terribly slow after some minutes playing.

One problem I can see if you are using the 9700m, or Mobility version of the chipset. Unfortunately, laptop manufaturers do not adhere to any form of standards when it comes to incorporating the Mobility chipsets onto their mainboards, and thus one brand may work to perfection, while another with the same chipset may be as slow as a dog.
What you may find (as other laptop users have discovered), is that by going through an area once, and then dying, you then get a performance increase, as much of the files that have to be loaded for that area have been cached, and thus load quicker.

I dont have arrival myself yet (just watched various vids and read the forums about it), so I cant comment on what has changed graphically to give you the sudden change in performance between the old game, and DLC installation. Im guessing at some minor tweaks in the Unreal3 engine which powers the game, but cannot be certain until I get the chance to deconstruct it for myself.

Varying frame rates almost sounds like a heat problem. The card heats up, drops performance cools off then reheats as performance increases again. Find a program to monitor your temps of your machine, ie GPU and CPU and see if you are almost cooking your machine. You may also want to check filters, or if it is a lap top, check and change what it is sitting on. But my first recommendation is to monitor your heat, and I would almost be willing to bet that is your issue.

I´ll try the heat solution.

On a different line, I have uninstalled the game and played it withtout DLC´s. It worked without issues but once the DLC´s are installed, it does freezes again.

After taking out the lid and rising the back part of the laptop with a couple books, it runs smooth. I guess it´s time to get a can of compressed air and clean the ventilation and fan.

Good deal, glad to hear you found the issue. It is amazing how many heat issue crop up, and people don't realize what it is.
