Hey guys,

I've tried playing Dragon Age: Origins on several operating systems (xp 64, vista 32 and 7 64) and keep getting the same problem. About 2 - 3 minutes into playing, the game will start to stutter/lockup for a few seconds, resume normal play then stutter/lockup again (over and over). This continues no matter how many restarts or fixes I try.

I've tried installing the patches, I've rolled back my drivers, I've updated my drivers, I've ended background programs/services, changed all the different video/audio options and still no luck.

I run a Core Duo 2.63
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 512mb
4gb of RAM
Realtek High Definition Audio onboard sound
Standard IDE 350gb hard drive

I just finished Modern Warfare 2 on max settings without a problem, so I'm convinced its not my hardware/software.

Anyone have any ideas on what I could do?

If i had to guess, it would be your onboard sound. Might want to try new sound driver or better yet separate sound card like soundblaster X-Fi.

DA:O seems to hit the HDD a goof bit especially when teh level first loads, are you sure your HDD is an IDE and not a SATA? That could be an issue right there.

Also what resolution are you playing at? A 9600GT is pretty much a rebranded 8600GT so maybe try lower settings? When you tried differant drivers are you uninstalling the old ones, rebooting into safe mode, running driversweeper (or other such program), rebooting and then installing the new ones or are you just installing over the old ones?

Some people have mentioned performance increases by changing your CPU core affinity to a single core.

Your system specs are definitely legit, so there's something weird with how Dragon Age is interacting with your system. I don't think it'd be the onboard audio though.

If the CPU core affinity adjustment doesn't work, a more off the wall suggestion that some people have had work is disabling anti-virus software.

I would try using Wait for Vertical Refresh and Turn Anti-Aliasing off also.

Could try graphics detail to Medium also.

If the problem starts after a few minutes and then continues, it might be an issue with GPU overheat. Try some of the following steps:

1. Clean the dust off your video card, especially around the fan and heatsink

2. Use RivaTuner or nVidia Tuner to scale back your GPU clock settings

3. If neither of those work, run some benchmarking stress tests to see if you get any failures on your vidieo card, and replace it as necessary.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I found my old XFi gamer card and I'm going to try that first.

I'm definitely sure my hard drive is an IDE, and I did make sure to unistall original drivers, and do the steps mentioned above.

I will give all your options a try, thank you very much!

Also, I run my resolution in 1680x1050 as with all my games, and my performance in all games, including Dragon Age, is fantastic. The only problem is the stutter/freezing that I experience after a few minutes into gameplay. I will definitely try stress testing my graphics card to see if thats the problem; however I'm struggling with the idea because Modern Warfare 2 ran perfect with all max settings.

Another possibility is defrag. Get a good defragger like PerfectDisk, which lets you defrag individual files. I can't tell you how many times defrag has resolved lag issues for me over the years.

I notice the game ran a ton better when i changed the aspect from 16:9 to 4:3.

The game seems to have issues with running in widescreen.

And as a last resort, using the Riva Tuner to back the clock speeds down 50 points or so has help me alot.

I use defraggler from the guys who do CCleaner, and its been run several times. Like I said though, I've had no other problems with games besides this one, and its stuttering. The XFi Sound Blaster did not seem to fix the problem, I'll have to try the aspect and the core affinity now.

King,

I have the same problem, and I don't know precisely why..

.. however, as a temporary solution that worked for me was to take it out of, 'Full Screen' Mode. After I did that, it became beautiful and smooth, even with the full graphics settings ;D

Success! I combined Jak's solution and the core affinity (set to core0) and I havent had any stuttering thus far! I'm going to try full screen and see if it works :)

King,

Yes, most definintely let me know if setting Core Aff fixes the problem. Also, I may ask how one does that to begin with, haha. Glad though if nothing else works this gives you a temporary solution~ It's a really fun game!

Jak, it seems the core affinity was the solution. I'm currently playing at 1650x1050 with max settings and its working flawlessly :)

In order to set the affinity, you have to have the game running.

1. Alt+tab out of the game

2. While on your desktop, run task manager

3. Go to processes tab

4. Right click the daorgins.exe (something like that)

5. Select Set Affinity...

6. Make sure only Core0 is checked

7. Resume gameplay to see if it worked

Hope that helps you. Thank you all for your ideas!
