On my tv, my ps3 is setup to play at16:9 and everything is widescreen. However when i play da2 it changes to 4:3 and there is gray bars down the sides of my tv, even the xmb is forced into 4:3. Also i cannot read the text most of the time because it is too small to read on my 52" tv, which must be pre small. How can this be fixed? I can SS when i get home

Check your screen output settings in the XMB; you should select all of the screen resolutions including 720p and 1080i. If your PS3 is connected to your HDTV through an AVR, make sure you check the AVR settings as well.

DA2 is at 720p, so you should have no trouble getting 16:9 output.

This happened to me with both DA:Origins and DA2, doesn't happen with any other games. I just manually change the aspect ratio on my tv (an old CRT!). if anyone has an explanation, that would be most welcome!

I should check origins too then? Havent tried it on new tv. But like i said, its setup properly on the xmb, but da2 forces it back to 4:3 ratio

What type of connections are you using to plug your PS3 to the TV?

Tried the red yellow white cable that came with it to see if it made a difference. Normally use hdmi. Still no change

Like she said, check your output settings, using Analog connection (Red-White-Yellow) might have been the source of your problems, but since you say you're using HDMI it should work fine.

Perhaps your TV doesn't support 720P mode and switches to a different format and causes the problem you are experiencing.  when you see the grey bars on TV, try to display the mode used by the tv, it might help you figure out what's wrong.

Hope that helps.

It supports 720p, and 1080p. Just tried origins and getting the same problem... These are the only 2 games doing this

I'm having the same problem with DA2. Every other game works fine, but this outputs in 4:3. In my case, I'm using component cables, because the PS3 HDMI will not handshake with my older TV. The 360 handshakes fine. The TV won't support 720P, but 1080i and 480p are OK. DA2 won't output 1080i, so I'm stuck on 480p that is outputting in 4:3. Sounds like a programing issue since every other game is fine.

BTW, I played DA:O on PC, so I don't have that PS3 disc to compare.

Anybody having this problem on the 360? (No, I'm not a fanboy. I own and love both system. But I will consider switching for this game if it fixes the problem.)

I haven't encountered this. I know you said your PS3 is set to 16:9, but have you checked your actual TV's setup? Maybe your TV somehow got its aspect ratio set to 4:3, letterbox, or similar, and that's knocking out the PS3's ratio settings.

Also, to the person that said the TV won't accept 720p, only 1080i or 480p, are you sure? If the TV accepts 1080i, it should also accept all lower resolutions.

Absolutely sure. Confirmed with the manual and I tested it. It is an older EDTV, back when they made plasmas with 853x480 pixels. Accepts 1080i input, but then scales it to 853x480.

As far as the PS3 is concerned, when using Component Cables, there isn't even an option to choose 'Aspect Ratio'. You only input 'Resolution' (480p, etc.), then the programmers need to guess what your Aspect Ratio is. Until now, it has always been 16:9 for 480p. DA2 is 4:3. I don't know why.

I downloaded the 360 demo, and that plays correctly in 16:9. Probably because the 360 lets you input Aspect Ratio in the system settings. So, Bioware didn't need to guess. I'm glad that I can at least switch systems to solve the problem. I'd be really screwed if this happened to Sony exclusives like Uncharted!
