I swear, I must be the only person who plays this way.

From reading the most recent/voiciferous threads in this forum, I seem like a statistical anomaly. What I'm going to outline below is my favorite way to play the game, and the Shepard that I really consider "mine."

Am I doing something wrong or missing something here? Because the way that people reccomend and talk about around here is completely different from my experiences in ME2.

- Rolled an Engineer, gave up Kaidan, saved Wrex, romanced Ashley, was full-out Paragon in every option in ME1

- Imported said Engineer into ME2, went full Paragon again, romanced Jack

- Cleared on Casual, plan to do harder-difficulty runs after importing other characters from ME1

- Standard loadout:
M-6 Carnifex
M-12 Locust
M-22 Eviscerator
Arc Projector Weapon

- Standard Away Team:
Grunt (With Eviscerator)
Thane (With M-97 Viper)

- Ability Evolution
Heavy Overload
Heavy Incinerate
Attack Drone
Full Cryo Blast
Improved AI Hacking
Mechanic
Advanced Training: Heavy Warp Ammo

I have the Cerberus Network and all the DLC that entails, Kasumi - Stolen Memory, Zaeed - Price of Revenge, and LotSB. Given the set-up I've outlined, are there reccomendations for changes in playstyle I should adopt? Will this change as I go through higher difficulty play? Or am I simply an underrepresented minority, but a viable one?

Thanks for reading this screed; I'm mostly just confused is all.

There isn't anything weird or unusual about what you're doing. Would work on insanity as well.

For my engineers/adepts I prefer to use the GPS rather than Evi (and Claymore for vanguard) because it's so good against common defenses at some range, but both are good. Nothing weird there. Locust is a great SMG, so no problems there. The Phalanx is OK, but I personally prefer the reliable and forgiving but weak (only per shot, not overall) Predator for higher difficulties.

Full Cryo Blast is kind of mediocre and I would personally probably do something else, but it works and again there's nothing weird about it.

On higher difficulties you will need to use anti-defense powers more and to remember which weapons work best against different defenses. As an engineer, Drone would probably be your best skill by far.

I highly recommend trying something harder. I went straight from normal to insanity and wasn't too intimidated. But after I got used to insanity, I can't stand how quickly things die on normal anymore.

Full Cryo is mostly for killing Husks and Aboms; I found that the Arc Projector could take out multiple ones, but it took two shots to kill a group, and it ate through my ammo like candy. I usually max out Incinerate, Overload, and Combat Drone as I outlined above.

And I don't have the GPS due to not having the Firepower pack, and because the Locust is so good at range in the first place. The Locust is for stripping off Barriers thanks to Warp Ammo or just general killing at long range, while the Evi is for stopping someone who's too close for comfort and needs to die right now.

Yeah Cryo is fine against husks/aboms. They're a bit more annyoing to kill on higher difficulties because they are protected by armor. The Incineration Blast evolution is very good for those missions, and then you can use whatever afterwards (Slam, Pull, Throw, Cryo Blast, ...). For everything else I personally prefer the heavy evolution. They both work fine anyway.

I don't personally use Heavy Weapons much though. Maybe you could use the Arc Projector more to just destroy defenses on higher difficulties and then actually kill enemies in other ways. That's where all the crowd control comes into play. It's not really that useful on lower difficulties, but enemies have lots of health on insanity.

I can see why Heavy Weapons aren't 100% vital to gameplay, but I figure you should use every tool they give you to kill people, so why the hey not.

Personally, I like using Heavy Weapons to shore up problems and difficulties I'm having in combat. Before I got Warp Ammo and the Locust, I was having hella problems stripping away Barriers, so I held onto the Collector Particle Beam, which rips Barriers to shreds. Now that I can deal with Barriers without Heavy Weapons, the next problem I had was taking on multiple opponents, especially Husks and Aboms; I'm considering using the Avalanche instead of trying to max out Cryo Blast for such a situational use, since maxed out Overload / Incinerate are a lot more useful.

Don't get me wrong. It's sort of a handicap that I don't use them. I always want to save ammo and then I never get to actually use it. I just meant if you are running out of ammo, you could use heavy weapons for the worst part of the job and then deal with the rest using normal powers and weapons.

Pardon me Russano, but if you don't have the Firepower Pack, how on earth did you get the Phalanx? That pistol is from the Firepower Pack.

Whoops, that's a typo; that's supposed to be the M-5 Carnifex, not the Phalanx; I'll amend that soon. Thanks for pointing that out, SpockLives!

Shotgun Engineers kick ass. If you haven't already, check out: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/261/index/4873892

Engineers are very flexible and you can use many different builds and squads to make them work exceptionally well. Drones and AI Hacking are awesome, Cryo Blast (although I usually take Neural Shock bonus power for insta-cast, 3 s cooldown CC ability) is great to take enemies out of the fight for a decent time (plus extra damage, very nice against powerful enemies like Krogan for example). Overload and Incinerate will deal with most defenses nicely.

Pick the powers you like to use yourself most of the time and max them, use your squadies to help with things your Engineer cannot do (like bringing Thane, Miranda and/or Samara when you're up against Collectors (who use barriers)).

Also, check out Bozo's AI Hacking thread, some really useful info on how to manipulate the AIs in this game. I've done a dominate / ai hacking engineer and had a blast.

Actually there is something wrong! You have 7 powers fully evolved which either means you made a mistake when you listed the powers or you added 19 more squad-points for a total of 70 points to max out 7 powers.

That's just a general listing of what my powers are like when I max out a given one; Max Cryo Blast when fighting Husks, maxed out AI hacking when fighting Geth, etc.

Nothing weird there, and if what you have works, more power to you! :)
I like your flow diagram - very structured, although I guess things don't go exactly like that all the time.

If you've got warp ammo 3, why not max the passive and maybe drop incinerate down to 3?

Oh as a side note I couldn't help noticing your username. Not another Redwaller by any chance?

In a perfect world, that's how it usually goes. Though, that doesn't stop me from accidentally firing Overloads at shieldless mercs. >_>;

Mostly because I use Warp Ammo to rip off Barriers and deal damage when my abilities are on cooldown, while Incinerates / Overloads are for stripping away defenses or finishing off unprotected organics / synthetics, respectively. A single tech power, especially a maxed one with hella upgrades, seems to put enemies down faster and harder than 2 clips worth of Locust rounds, even with Warp Ammo and upgrades. Plus, using abilites conserves ammo.

This mostly boils down to my playstyle it seems, but I prefer to use bullets to support tech attacks, as opposed to using tech attacks to support bullets.

Definitely; I loved the books as a kid, and Russano just seems like an awesome name to me. :P
