I haven't made custom content since NWN tilesets, using good old GMax and a custom export snooper. Houdini is new to me but seems to have everything you'd want for DA.

The free version has nearly all the relevant features of the bazillion dollar version, so you're getting a hell of a lot. And it has Python and some kind of Houdini scripting which probably gives you enough features to make custom DA modelling and export tools possible.

What do you think?

Really depends on which one you are getting, are you talking about the free edition because it leaves watermarks on the model and the rendering is not all that great on it. I haven't really played it in detail but it seems to be ok but I use XSI over it.

Not too concerned about rendering so watermarking isn't an issue (and the HD version is only $99 anyway). The main idea is to make DA content and use the scripting to bridge the gap. But the learning curve on anything not max-like for me is pretty steep so I'd like to know if this program has any hope of community support here before digging into it.
