Leandra's death was by far the moment that got to me the most. I was upset when she died, but I started bawling like a baby when I had the convo with Gamlen afterwards. And then the scene with Hawke and Fenris after that.

Carver getting taken away by Stroud was a tough one too.

The companion quests I felt most emotionally invested in were the final Merrill quest (I did NOT know you had the option of not killing her clan, that was brutal) and the final Fenris quest (especially when you romance him and he gives you that look).

Another moment that was emotional in that it gave me the warm and fuzzies was when Carver came back, and pretty much everything he said in the final battle. His pre-battle conversation is probably my favorite moment in the game.

Bethany's death in the Deep Roads not knowing it was coming and on my first playthrough. "Oh Sunshine".

All That Remains is another obvious choice, but I think I was too busy with my jaw on the floor that they had actually let it play out that way. Lastly saving Merrill: This is something that just sort of accumalated over the game for me, started out as just another side quest and ending up as something that I found quite powerful.

Perhaps the key moment there would be withholding the Elven device she needed and then starting Act 3 with her hiding away in her home, something about the way Hawke and Varric are helping her just gets me and represents what I love about the rivalry system. It's also one of the ways I felt they did a great job of giving me things I could base my imagining of the event of the past three years off - in this case it made sense to imagine my Hawke as having grown closer to Merrill despite their 'rivalry' due to having helped Varric look out for her.

I think if you let yourself become immersed in the game then they handle a lot of the potentially emotional moments brilliantly in DA2. The one exception for me is the death of your sibling in the prologue: The lack of a Lothering section (however brief) that properly introduces you to your family is one of my major gripes with the game and I wasn't hit as hard by it as I may have been otherwise.

When Carver blamed Hawke for the death of Bethany, and my Hawke agreed. Carver looked like he accidentally killed a puppy and the whole situation made me 'D:' face.

- Having Fenris comfort Hawke after MamaHawke. Even though it was evident that it was terribly uncomfortable for him, he wanted/needed to let her know he was there for her. After stumbling about, trying trying to find the right words, he sat beside her and said something to the effect of "at times like these, I don't see the value of empty talk" and the screen faded to black. I image they sat there in silence for hours.

- Encountering Bethany while the streets erupted in chaos. The years with the Wardens changed Beth, hardened her. She seemed so resentful. Poor Hawke. In the Deep Roads, Hawke thought she was making the right decision by giving Bethany to the Wardens, giving Bethany the only possible shot at life. Apparently, it turned out Bethany hated her for it. Watching Beth walk away broke Hawke's heart and took the wind right out of her sails. Since Varric was there both times (in the Deep Roads and now, on the streets of Kirkwall), I wish he had comforted Hawke at that point. Put his arm around her shoulder... scratch that, around her waist and said, "It's ok, kid. She's alive and she's not Tranquil. You did good".

This is obvious but there really wasn't any other situation that took me by surprise like the chantry explosion. I knew Anders was up to no good... but an explosion that completely annihilates a building the size of the chantry? Never even entered my mind that could be possible in this game. I was absolutely shocked and pissed at the same time. There was not enough death in the world for me to lay on Anders at that point, especially since he happened to be my character's LI at the time. I was so disgusted with his actions and excuses and so upset that I never saw it coming. It was a powerful moment and honestly not one I will forget... well, ever.

Leandra scarred sitting in that chair. It was obvious she was a corpse by then and my Hawke instantly realized that she had lost all people she cared about :(

And lastly at the conclusion of his romance, his last lines were imo, the most touching I had heard in the game, however, at the same time I couldn't help but finally see that his love for Hawke had taken a backseat, even though at the end Varric says Anders stays with Hawke, his fight for the mages' freedom was the most important thing in his life, more so than even Hawke.  In fact, if you break up the romance with him at the end.  Hawke tells him "I know I will never be the most important thing in your life".  So even though I decided to stay with him the ending was kind of bittersweet to me :(

Aww what does Anders reply to the breakup?

I liked how in the last questioning beliefs quest (after justice) he tells Hawke something among the lines of "you're the most important thing in my life... but there are things that matter more than my life"

Breaking up with him was my first choice.  He replies back saying "I wish I had no loyalties greater than you, that's the freedom I'm fighting for.  Ten years, one hundred years from now, someone like me will love someone like you, and there will be no templars to tear them apart."

So while he wants Hawke to be the first thing in his life, his sense of justice is greater than that, it's very noble and selfless of him to put the happyness of others before his, which attached me to his character even more, so I just HAD to reload and choose to stay with him haha, even though Hawke would always be second for him. :(

I almost never cry, but Leandra's death had me nearly in tears. Especially with the cutscenes that come afterwards - especially if you are playing a mage and Gamlen says that maybe the templars are right, etc, followed by the short scene with your LI or Aveline.

The conversation with Aveline after it all (The Captain's Condolences) when she talks about her father is also very touching. For some reason that conversation option has only ever triggered on one of my playthroughs. On the others, Hawke's dialogue options all mean 'I don't want to talk about it'.

Similarly, Bethany/Carver dying in the Deep Roads.

Anders' destruction of the Chantry and the resulting events, if you romanced him. The betrayal aspect makes it quite emotional for me.

Wow, just wow. That line is pure amazingness. After hearing that I don't know how anyone could not reload and continue the romance instead.

Before the ending battle when Fenris is like don't die I can't live without you... when he says I thought you were different and leaves (though I only saw a vid, never dared to let that happen). And when Carver and Leandra die.

When/why does he say that one? I've only ever seen the first one.

He says that in the "Wrong Road" quest I think it's called, which you get if you wait too long to complete the "Bitter Pill" quest. But he only says it if you won't help him and tell him he's on his own.

The scene when, on the Rivalry path with Merrill, she took a rock or whatever and smashed the eluvian. It was emotional for me because that's about the only point in the game when I felt my choices actually made a difference.

I get all the obvious ones, too (Chantry, Leandra, Marethari, etc.) but one of the moments that really surprised me in its strength was when Isabela betrayed Hawke in the Fade and he can basically tell her to go ahead, knowing that she loves her freedom/the sea as much as she does and how surprised she is that Hawke understands and accepts her the way she is.

talking with aveline after your moms death was a nice touch. one of my characters tried to blame her for it and she just stood there silent ofr the most part. then he said for her to at least defend herself and she said she understood why he was lashing out and that she was sorry. very good writing.

but all merrill missions touched me the most. and on a subsequent playthrough when i had to turn her down when she visited the mansion actually caused me to have heart pain. which is either wonderful that they could make such wonderfull characters or sad that i would get so attached. probably both.

happy or funny moments:
when isabela says "your leaving...no sex?" to zevran was freaking funny so blunt and since i was romancing her at the time i picked the "what about me?" option thinking i was gonna shut down the hookup. then she said well join in of course lets go over there. and avelines grossed out look on her face. hahaha classic
also the banter between isabela and aveline about avelines sex life and isabela finishing with if u stick your thumb up his ass, i win and the subsequant EWWWW!

shock/sadness:
the Chantry fireworks was completely surprising as anders started talking i was like whats going on here? and my eyes and mouth preceded to widen more and more till the end of the cinematic, and i did up drooling.

Leandra dying in hawkes arms. it got a knot in my throat wont lie. Hawke blaming himself and the look on his face didnt help. the whole quest i felt i needed to rush to save her life thinking if i took too long then i would lose her. street bandits never died so fast that day. and gamlen afterwards blaming hawke, that was cold was feeling like crapolia already thanks.

killing the entire dalish clan. every swing i was yelling NO STOP ATTACKING MEE!!! boo will never forgive merril for that.

anger: in the epilogue...wtf varric the companions went their separate ways....and?? thats it?? that really pissed me off i guess leave it open for like 100 dollars worth of DLC

This is what I can think of at the top of my head:
- Anders' romance with Hawke. So incredibly well-written, and touching.
- Receiving "The Warden's Promise" in Act 2. I know it's cheesy, but it made me feel really warm and fuzzy inside.
- Bodahn acknowledging his age, and fearing for Sandal's well-being... Quite sad.
- Ariani speaking about Feynriel... "And now they've taken him..." Her voice sounds so sad, so heartbroken. I felt really emotional for her.

Lots of stuff with Sandal and Bodahn.

I smiled, I laughed, I almost cried.

Dont do that! I think that is were the boom comes from!

Lovely house isint it Sandal?
I am sorry I broke it...
Err yess I will get that cleaned up.

Seeing how emotional Bodahn got seeing his son again was also good.

I actually suspected it immediately when he revealed there wasn't a potion in Act 2.  "He's gonna blow up the Chantry!"  But I felt the same as you nonetheless.  Minus the LI.  I watched him like a Templar

-Ok this is obvious, the end of the game. From people's speech about Meredith I imagined she would be this monster and I didn't realise it was her who looks at the robber in ACT 1. I almost started to despise her from what people said about her, but everything changed when she owned that Qunari Mage in Act 2. Immediately when I saw her, I said this is my favourite character.

The masculine energy was amazing.  Those few seconds were the best part of the game.  (I liked the game) Too bad she turned into a nutjob.  She had some good speeches as well.

Mama Hawke Leandra's demise brought me down a notch. Followed by Bethany's loss at the mage's prologue.
