Sorry if this is too nitpicky, but has anyone else noticed the difference between these two super beings?

No, its not their size or abilities.

Rather, its the writing of their dialogue.

Sovereign was scary, IMO.  He elevated himself above Sheppard, explaining that he was the "vanguard" of humaniy's destruction.  He didn't descend into a taunting 'mine is bigger than yours' conversation that I just saw in ME2: Arrival.

Yes, the voice acting and music were different for both but I'm focusing on what was said.

And that's the point of my post.  Harbringer just seems really lame and I feel no fear of him/them.  He's just a troll. For ME3 (if it's not too late) could the writers please remember to have Habringer maintain a posture of superiority and indifference towards whatever taunting that Shepperd gives...at least until they finally feel a real threat?

Sovereign : "I won't even dignify that with an answer".

Harbinger : "Please think I'm sounding scary please please..".

I personally like it when the Reapers talk to you personally. Of course Harbinger's conversation wasn't as epic as Sovereign's but it still put things into perspective a bit.

I was more impressed with Harbinger's movement than his talking.
So yeah... he can walk the walk but not talk the talk.

EDIT: But I do love Harbingers V/A more than Sovereigns.

They're just very different characters. Sovereign is an evil Reaper and Harbinger is a nice Reaper who's simply trying to convince you it's all for the best.

This would be more a debate if Harbinger did not toss childish insults at you all day. That sort of ruins any intimidation any subsequent dialogue with him would ever have.

Why do people keep misspelling it "Harbringer"?

Sovereign is much better. His voice sounds synthetic and his personality feels alien. Harbinger is just the stereotypical bad guy who gets angry and insults you. Sovereign actually makes you feel like you are the dirt under his fingernail.

Sovereign's voice was better than Harbinger's. Harbinger's voice effects are less synthesised, and he behaves more emotionally than Sovereign. I wish they'd make Harbinger more oppressive rather than such a Large Ham, but I'm thinking it might be too late.

While Sovereign souded trully mechanical, alien and dreadful ... Harbinger is more like a generic affected demon suffering from Shepard obsession...

I think it goes without saying that both the writing and voice for Sovereign were immensely superior to Harbinger.

Sovereign gave (and still does) chills whenever he spoke... Harbinger I was just very neutral in my reaction.. didn't instill dread, intimidation or fear into me the way Sovereign did (and it's definitely due to the voice in a large degree... Sovereign sounded mechanical.. Harbinger sounds like a voice actor pursing his lips, stretching his lower jaw down and talking into the mic like: "Doooom.. Youuu are all dooooomed".

They really should have at least run a lot more filters / digitization over the voice actor's lines (like they did for Sovvy).

True.  Everything you said. However, I'm still feel that part of the issue is that Harbringer is far more ego based (insecure?) as a couple of folks pointed out here.  Harbringer sounds like he's trying to prove that he's scary whereas Sovereign isn't affected or miffed by Sheppard.  He knows that he's talking to a spec of dirt and one gets a feel that Sovereign might just be right.  :crying:

Well Sovereign was a Reaper.
Harbinger was ONLY a descendant of the collectors.

Sovereign should sound more ominous and scary....by far.

Harbinger is a Reaper. He merely controls the collectors through the same methods as used in indoctrination (with the exception being that it's easier to control the collectors since they are merely modified Protheans who have no independent mind with which to resist indoctrination any longer).

How you missed / mistook Harbinger for a collector is dumbfounding to me... it was very clear from quite early on in the game.

Oh and also... it's not "Was" ... it's "Is" ... Harbinger is still alive, Shepard killed the collector general, not Harbinger.

Sovereign's dialogue was very well done, it was quite menacing and a bit shocking (and I think it was meant to be that way). I find this part quite amazing,  “We impose order on the chaos of organic evolution. You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.” gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it.

I can why some people find Harbinger annoying since he is quite chatty [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]  I didn't thought him much menacing as Sovereign, but I really enjoyed some of Harbinger's phrases too, he just kept coming no matter how many times you "killed him", somehow proving that what you do is pointless, you cannot stop the reapers and their goals.

Sovereign thought you were a wom.
Harbinger thought you were cool and wanted you to join the club.

Of course Sovereign is going to be more intimidating.

Sovereign sounded the part, if a army of giant killer machines ever invanded the world thats how I imagined they would sound, not to say Harbingerr was bad but he just couldn't complete with Sovereign.

Nah, both Reapers are intimidating - it's just that Sovereign was the first. He was the Initial Scare. He was the Boo! Now that we know what's waiting in the wings, the initial impact is lessened. Now I expect Reapers, and I expect them to come on down the line with the attitude that they can't lose.

I actually think that Harbinger is the better of the two Reapers. Yes Harbinger tosses around more insults than Soverign had but his final dialogue when you set the Collector base to explode and you're feeling all good he calmly states "You have changed nothing" was creepy to me. I also felt that Harbinger at the very end of the game was more 'evil' than Sovereign was because he released the Collector General just moments before it was killed, the sad/confused look it had made me feel bad for it.
Then you have that amazing image of him waking up along with the others as they make their march towards the galaxy that's the best image in ME so far.

Harbringer > Sovereign
