Friend is getting an old PC on the cheap.

They want to know if DA:O will run but I can't find a demo.

They are planning to play at either 1024x768 or 1280x1024 with the quality settings turned down if necessary (preferably with VSync on).

System is:

Core 2 DUO E6400 @ 2.1ghz
3gb DDR2 SDRAM (not sure of speed but not likely to be fast)
NVidia GT 220

Would you be able to get a decent frame-rate out of that?

The GT 220m is not an actual gaming device compared to a Mainline Gaming Graphics card. The desktop version (I have to guess you really are referring to a laptop, which uses "SODIMM" RAM, not DIMMs) was a replacement for the older Geforce 8500 GT / 9400 GT pair (same card, two names) of budget cards with borderline performance. Where the older pair actually fell below the dividing line between Low End and Medium, the 220 ended up barely above that dividing line, but it's still very minimal.

If we assume that the laptop's display is either basically low resolution, so it doesn't overwork the 220 GT, or is good enough quality that low resolution settings work properly on it, then a 220 is supposed to be usable on DAO, but not at particularly great image quality settings.

Sorry, I should have specified that this is actually a desktop and the GT 220 also being the desktop variety. Image quality settings can be set as low as possible.

At least, your friend will have the option of an upgrade, quite reasonably priced, these days (well, if Japanese stopped electronic production isn't about to affect Graphics cards -- they make a lot of parts used on them), while laptop owners have no such option.

The GT 220 is fine for this game, the only real issue might be your CPU speed.

It should run on your system, you might have to play around with the options a bit to get it running smoothly though.

i've played the game with a 9500GT which is a similar card to the GT220 the 220 being slightly better and it ran the game on medium graphical detail and high textures no AA and no AF at around 20-30fps it'll lag at some points in the game but it is playable. Just keep your expectations realistic and adjust the graphics options to suit the cards capability.

You can probably save some money by using a USB temporarily to speed it up. Remember that although this may speed up your system; but, you can also slow it down. I use my 16GB Rocketfish on my laptop to play DAO and it gives me about an additional 4 GB's RAM.

That's good to know :). Was this also being played at a lower resolution? The monitor she is getting with it is only an old 4:3 flat-panel so it won't be pumping out anything over 1280x1024

Well you said it is a desktop right?! She could probably get a better improved moniter that gives a better res. My system can give up to a 1600 X 900 so I get a pretty well amount of res for a pc. But for some reason I may have to lower my res to play DAO I am having a bit of a problem with it right now everytime I try to kill that accursed archdemon I get a compatibility error msg. So I guess I would keep the res where it is at for now until you can back up a higher res with graphics and of course power.

1280x768 which is a suitable resolution for a card like that. Big resolutions like the above poster talked about won't work well for a budget card.

Well I do not know much about Graphics Cards so I leave that to the experts... What I do know about is Screen and Image Resolution. Like what I tell my students and fellow colleagues is that Resolution is based on relativity. Relativity is the only way to determine whether it is good or not. Meaning for instance you have your variables and you determine whether or not the resolution is good or not. Comparing those set variables is unfoundable to anothers' set variables. Due to inconvient relativity because the variables are varied and different.

I can't tell if that was a serious post or not... Anyway I think initially I will recommend she play at 1024x768 and see how that goes. She certainly won't be using 1600x900 or 1280x768 because she doesn't have a widescreen display.
