The only thing that irks me is the contrived situation that kills off Bethany if you take her to the Deep Roads.
Think about it - you're a warrior or rogue getting in the face of Darkspawn and cutting them up to the point that their blood is in your mouth and the mage who hangs in the back and never gets any blood splatter is the one who gets the blight.

What.

Well, since the melee fighters wear lots of armor, that would give them more protection against the blight, whereas Bethany would probably be a lot worse off if she was attacked up-close.

But yeah, they should've added something else. Why not some kind of potion that makes you temporarily immune to the blight? Something you'd have to take like once every day at precise intervals. And maybe Bethany accidentally missed it ... or something more dramatic, like she accidentally lost her doses, and figured that she didn't want to tell Hawke, since he gets into the middle of things a lot more and thus she didn't want him to give his doses to her. And then she just happened to get struck when she was susceptible.

Or something.

Side note, I'm not sure which is a worse place for Bethany, the circle or the wardens. .>.>
Act 2 started and all I could think was how much Bethany would love the new house.

/cry

Act 2
Circle - Bethany would be quite satisfied at her life, as she's with people like her, and can train her magic in peace
Grey Warden - Bethany appears to be suffering from daily nightmares, and has not come to grip with the fact she's got darkspawn taint in her. She claims it to be a daily fight for survival, and has a grudge against you.

Act 3
Circle - Similar to Act 2. Depending on your endgame choices, Bethany may or may not have a happy time till the end of DA2.
Grey Warden - She hates you less, but is still unhappy about life as a Warden. By the last parts of the game though, she apologises for blaming you at all, claims to have accepted life as a Grey Warden, and says she will take her place at your side once more as your sister

I wouldn't call it a 'grudge'. Her letter says she's surviving because 'that's what you wanted, right?' With her response when getting (gravel swallowing) Nathanel from the Deep Roads, I think she misses you/mother far more then she lets on.

I don't see the point in even having one if you're just going to kill or take them out of the party for two thirds of the game.

They're ****s, I meet Beth again and she's a Grey Warden doing Grey Warden things and she cops an attitude.

It's like...b*tch really? I dragged your sorry ass all over the damn Deep Roads looking for the Wardens to save your stupid self and you're giving me crap for that?

It felt very, very out of character for her. Writing fail.

Because she would rather have died.

Compared to a quick death, life as a Grey Warden to her is permenant nightmares every night, a daily fight for survival, and a never-ending struggle against the darkspawn she hates so much. Best of all, she knows its still an early death sentence, albiet a slow and painful one.

Still, I am guessing you didn't complete the game. You will get more interactions with her.

In fairness, in the books I think they portray the blight as a kind of sludge in the deep roads - think the creep like what the zerg have in Starcraft - it's all on the walls in the Deep Roads, and definitely on darkspawn weapons. So just by walking around in an area where there's a heavy darkspawn presence you're at risk of getting infected. If she gets stabbed or shot, that just ups the exposure. It's been a while since I've read the books (before Origins came out, trying to get a feel for the lore) but I'm pretty sure that's how it was.

Agreed, did they state why they just had to kill her?  I doubt if my group will ever have Bethany and Anders in it at the same time so I'll just have to leave her home any time I play with her in my group.  I feel I'm in a real bind mage wise now as I dislike Anders a great deal and don't really want him in my group at all, Bethany is toast so that leaves Merrill every single game.  I like Merrill just fine and she's an awesome mage but I don't want here every single game.  I think I'll have to go mageless in a future playthrough.

How about this.,,since she is your mage/healer in the deep roads and you were slaying darkspawn (and getting stabbed, slashed, injured, infected). We know that mages only have so much mana and maybe she decided that as her brother you and your party were more important to heal. So if she ran out of mana, she would think what would it hurt if I skipped on healing myself, I don't seem that injured. Maybe most experienced or circle mages know that if you are anywhere near dark spawn corruption you must heal frequently to stem from getting corrupted. Something she didn't know as it was not taught to her.

At first, I really liked the idea of having Carver and Bethany leave the group, but I thought they'd come back during Act 2. And I was playing through Act 2, all we got a stupid letter. I kept thinking, oh, they'll come back to join the party in the Qunari Invasion. We got an appearance, but no sibling companion. Then I thought don't worry, they'll join in Act 3. They didn't. This REALLY ANNOYED ME! I really liked them as characters, (even though I want to stab Carver in the face). 'Tis a shame they just disappear. I wanted them to have a romance, Carver-Merrill, Bethany-Anders.

Oh? I wasn't the only one who wanted a '**** slap Carver' option added?

I played a Rogue, haven't done Mage yet, and Carver STILL annoyed me. >>

Still - considering everything else that went on in the Circle, what with the implied raping (Alrik), and the random Tranquilising (so, so many), and the beatings and 'isolation therapy' (Evelina)... can we really trust Bethany when she says she's happy in the Circle and is teaching children?

Sounds a little bit too... neat. Beth's been an apostate for years. Evelina was a Circle Mage who was only 'apostate' while travelling from the Circle Tower to the Gallows, and for that they threw her in an isolation cell and drove her to madness and demon-fondling. Evelina, who gathered orphans and tried to make them a better home.

So then they let this life-long Apostate in, give her tea and cakes, and let her read bed time stories to baby maleficar? I'm not buying it.

That was my impression, too. It's so neat and perfect. It's like she's BEGGING you not to do something stupid and get yourself killed.

While I might have been able to kill Meredith at that point (with a well timed backstack + poison), she was probably right in thinking we coudln't storm the Circle.

Maybe I missed something but if you spend any money at all on pots, equipment, or potions for abilities or stats, then there just ain't enough left over to cover the 50 sovereign price to get into the deep roads. I didn't go crazy but I bought all the stat and ability increases, any NPC armor upgrade, and some poisons, runes, and pots pre deep roads and I had nowhere near 50 sovereigns left. I also completed every single quest in every single area and explored every inch of every map...

So, basically as far as I could tell, my game was over unless I accepted the dwarf's deal.

Every time I played, I ended up with at least ninety sovreigns and that's playing a lawful good character 99% of the time. Anything in the Black Emporium will wait til Act II and you can still afford all the companion armour upgrades, two backpacks, and the skill tome from Hubert in Act 1 and still have enough for the deep roads. The baddies will drop potions and injury kits more often if you drop below a certain amount, so there's no reason to buy them.
