He has 3 rune slots in his armor so you can make him immune to 3 different elemental magic and still have him be bad ass with damage dealing.

im tanking as hawke with a 2 hander, so far so freaking awesome. I dont take that much damage except from mages but when I got the immunity stuff (that doesnt require a sword and shield to use) to magic on I dont take that much damage either.
plays kinda like a mix between a warrior, a paladin and a death knight (from wow) and so far its WAAAAAAAAAY more fun than tankin with a shield. playin it on nightmare too and fights are so easy now

You might want to pay attention to the actual numbers on 1H and 2H.

what i mean is that playing a 2 hander is much more dps oriented, whereas weapon and shield is much more protection/stun/displacement oriented

I'm a 2H too, it works in certain battles. But I couldn't get it to work in the tough battles latter in the game, I needed a second Tank there with me. I guess it can work if you have stun and knockback immunity, but if you don't your 2H tank will be tossed around like a rag doll in the tough battles.

I mainly used Mage Hawke, Anders or Merrill, Fenris, and Isabela. I used Aveline a bit, but, like Carver, I didn't like how her area abilities would end up KOing my own guys. To avoid too much friendly fire with Fenris, I did not give him Giant's Reach.
Fenris' high stagger chance helped to clean up enemies quite quickly, which I preferred more than taunting with Aveline. Two tanks just seem to get in each other's way.

I ended up with most of vanguard skills, all of the 2h skills, few defender, reaper and second wind.
Varric was aggro master, using goad and armistace. He also had his flasks for causing confusion, and his personal tree almost maxed out along with specialist for damage.
Merrill was Primal with Hexing, and later spirit bolt and dispel. Her main job was cross class combos and debliltating tougher enemies.
And anders was the dedicated healer, running stone armour to keep alive. Buffing with haste and heroic aura too.
Overall its a very easy run. Only issues arise when you face multiple rogues, or occasional mishap where you kill a teammate with 2h warriors AoE attacks.

Kill assassin type enemies in cleave -> shattering blow > scythe > whirlwind.
Or even better, Petrify(brittle) -> cleave -> scythe, then maybe a shattering blow.
OH hey wut, another assassin? Templar silence, GG.
Wait... ANOTHER one? oof. stealth K LOL I HAVE TEMPLAR AOE. If you have the CD redux on second wind then just keep on truckin'.
Your fortitude score shouldn't be much of a problem, but there is a ring/neck you can get that will give you KB, stun, flanking immune, and I think they have STR/CON on them also.
Also, Cleave + WW will stagger just about everything it hits, so watch Merrill crit everything you just hit for 7k. (If you didn't outright one shot everything).
If you want to go further, IN1 I know has a good guide on abusing (see: creative use) +ED% mods on gear to hit upwards of 250k.
QuadDamage85, credit your source.
150 stam isn't needed. He talked about using cleanse in a DPS rotation which will end up HURTING your dps, because it will remove any party given sustainables (Elemental weapons, vail aura, might if applicable, or whatever else you use, and whatever your party has on if they get cought in FF).
You can keep it lower, squeeze out a bit more str, and chances are you'll find gear with +stam, or +all attrib.

Its when I face cheesy ass mobs of demons or Golems whose attacks knock you back.
Or sometimes there are magic attacks from enemies that have a automatic knockback if you don't have enough resistance.
And on Nightmare, when you get knocked back or stunned, your basically a dead duck.
