I dunno. I would have hoped he'd praise originality more than he did.
I believe that's because ME2 was a better game than DA2. Make sense? And the originality? The game's not that bleeding original, it's not like the first time you played Portal or System Shock or Black & White or anything. It's a hack'n'slash RPG they've been around in gaming longer than most gamers on this site have.
Yahtzee had tons of points as usual.

Oh, I agree that ME2 was a better game with better pacing and a smoother intergration of story and gameplay. What impressed me about DA2 was how it departed from the Bioware formula. Not once is Hawke inducted into a secret order and tasked with recruiting allies to stand against a vast encroaching darkness. YMMV on how well the story succeeds, but I thought playing the low fantasy card and playing it hard was an interesting move on the writers' part. Hell, the amount of heated debate generated by the story is interesting in itself.

This is true, but lets not forget that just because something is different it doesn't mean its better than the alternative. Bioware doesn't seem to do well when they depart from their "formula".

This isn't to say what he says is wrong, just that he won't really go into the positives much because hes paid to rant.
I agree with most of his points in this review, though the combat on PC I found to be a great improvement. If he played it on console it was probably awesomely ****e however - I remember playing Origins on the PS3 and yeah, the less I remember about that the better.

Don't forget that ZP's main draw is that its funny and not because it provides a particularly in-depth or balanced critique - and Yahtzee freely admits this for the most part. He likes shooters, sandbox and survival horror a lot more than RPG's, and he loathes JRPGs so the latter usually take more of a bashing from him.

For all of his wit and writing skills, I sometimes wonder if he doesn't sometimes get caught up in the expectation that he will not like certain games.
This was a softball review by his standards.
He did a great job in the opening of describing the odd state of affairs created by large numbers of people both hating and loving it.

BioWare could have told a story where Hawke, the refugee from Lothering, joins a powerful order (maybe the Seekers?) to combat an ancient but newly emerged evil that threatens to overwhelm Thedas.BewareTheDrow wrote...

It probably would have been a stronger story. It would have a clear objective and antagonist, and everyone understands the importance of saving the world. It's certainly a story BioWare has told many times before and excels at. People like it. I'd suggest many BioWare fans like BioWare because they give them the classic, epic hero's journey.
It just seems so soulless.

And he's dead on when it comes to the over all story that Dragon Age II sets out to accomplish. It doesn't have one.

His reviews make me laugh so much, I must say I'm a bit disappointed with that one. Some good moments though (Freud ! Freud !). And I was so waiting for someone else to point out how racist a magazine the Daily Mail is.
I completely forgot about that bit. That bit made me laugh. Much like the Norwich signpost with the sudden appearance of random enemies.

It did work, the problem is it required more time. As it is now it cuts off just as things truly start to develop and we're left with "And Hawke vanished into the sunset" while the plot elements all remain unresolved.

He loved Saint's Row 2 and if you watch his Thief review the only bad thing he says about it seems to be "And then every game tried to have a stealth element in it because of this game."
Me? I love me some Saint's Row 2 and I still have all three original Thief games. Replayed the first two last year, god they're still fun.
I miss you Garrett. I miss you The City. I miss you, Looking Glass Studios.

The only "review" of his I agree with 100% is of Metroid: Other M. But then how can anyone not see what a shallow, misogynistic piece of rubbish that game is. Ugh.

But most times I agree with him. I think I disagreed with him only on GTA4, Red Dead Redemption, Halo 3, and Uncharted 2. He's pretty spot on with my interests otherwise.
