Good post, well argued. Don't suffer from aracnophobia myself, but having a somewhat selective and bizarre hematophobia (If I cut my finger, I get light headed, nauseous and develop a cold sweat - yet I can watch an open heart surgery on TV without any problem ), I know what the difference is between the kind of fear you want from a horror movie or game, and a phobic fear that you do not want to ever experience.

It would be optimal if Bioware could come up with a new original monster to replace giant spiders in the Dragon Age world, as aracnophobia is not uncommon.

This is a really well written OP. I don't find my irrational twitchiness at spiders bad enough that it affects my gameplaying (much), but man my first response to reading the OP was to want to ask for it to be an open letter to all fantasy games ever to STOP IT WITH THE SPIDERS AGH AGH. I appreciate the OP for writing it, and David Gaider for writing a response.

That said...

To all the people belittling this person and saying 'just get over it' in regards to phobias? Especially the person who brought up agoraphobia (no, it's not just a fear of open spaces), which hey, guess what, I have to such a crippling degree that I can't work, can't usually go into any heavy social situations (like you know, bars, clubs, concerts), have panic attacks on airplanes, on the bus, or just walking down the street, have to psych myself up to go to the grocery store, and often dread so much as walking out my own front door?

Go. To. Hell.

First of all, the OP was not 'complaining' about it, merely explaining the stance of people who experience the phobia. Secondly, some phobias are notoriously difficult to overcome and take many hours in therapy to manage it with someone especially qualified to deal with phobias. This can cost thousands of dollars and still may not be successful. Thousands of dollars, or spending a few minutes writing a post pointing out that spiders really were used quite a lot and this is an issue for some people? The OP seems to have made the more intelligent choice to me... and as Gaider admits, spiders really WERE used quite a lot!

The homophobes feel the arachnophobes' pain.

Have some consistency here.

... Homophobia has never clincally been listed as a phobia. It's simply an intolerance. Arachnophobia, however, is suffered by 18% of western males and 55% of western females and IS a clinical phobia as per the DSM and ICD. That's all I'm going to say to that ignorance.

It's a fear to overcome, be it homosexuals or spiders. Cater to one, you gotta' cater to all.

You quite obviously do not understand the difference between a real phobia and simple fear or discomfort. Please read IanTheTexan's post above. A real phobia, as opposed to so called "homophobia", is a psychological condition that you don't have power over, and can't reason yourself out of. It is something that you fully recognize is irrational, and don't try to justify.

Wheras homophobes DO try to rationalize their position, do not consider it irrational, nor does the presence of homosexuals cause symptoms characteristic of a phobic reaction of a real phobia.

"Homophobia" is a layman term, not a clinical term, and equating it with real phobias is simply inaccurate.

I was disappointed that the spiders no longer used overwhelm as they did in Origins.
It was highly disturbing.

I thought we overused the giant spiders a bit

A bit that never having arachnophobia myself, I almost got one after playing that game.

I support OP and his fellow comrades at least for making monsters in the game more original and interesting to fight.

Fantasy artists, please stop that competition of who can draw the largest spider for their game, dammit.

The Giant Spiders is one of so many reasons to not play an RPG on a console and only play them on a PC. Reason being, someone already came up with a model swap to make the spider look like other creatures.

If you PC it. They will mod.

As long as they don't switch to cockroaches, I agree with toning down the spiders.

For people who don't like spiders and are playing on a PC and not a Console. There is a mod that will change all spiders to marbari

Personally I found the giant spider funny. Like out of a really bad B Movie. I like MST3K too much.

Actually that mod's even better than the pure mabari mod.  The monstrous spider's a qunari, some of the other grades of spider are darkspawn, and the animations are so demented and ridiculous that I spend entire battles laughing instead of cringing.

Bleh for all the spiders and the ceiling dropping thing.  At least "overwhelm" is gone-- my skin would crawl in DA:O spider battles.

Oh god I could imagine that as like the nightmare from hell for a anyone scared of spiders. Could be worse though. A bunch of midget clowns repeling down and then overwhelming you. Try sleeping after that one.

Don't the dwarves already do that?  :o  But I won't be sleeping after that mental image either.

It's funny-- I'm not even what you'd call arachnophobic, but I can't stand the little buggers.  My skin crawls when I see one on the wall, and my first reaction is to slam it with anything.  Even my bare fist.  What really freaks me out are webs.

Overcome said fear. Don't complain about it.

Let me guess, you're 16 years old and just read your first Nietzsche book? Or are you just a wannabe tough guy subconsciously scared of your own insecurities that you must bash signs of "weakness" in anyone else?

Fortunately I am only afraid of small spiders, but I feel your pain OP. An irrational fear cannot be reasoned with and can cause serious panic attacks. That's the last thing I would want when playing a video game that is supposed to be fun.

So you are afraid of small spiders but not scared of spiders the size of  a big dog? That's curious. The phobias are a very interesting subject indeed and I unerstand a sensible game would actually try to adress them the best they could. But obviously you need to make yourself heard, you've done well posting this here.

While I understand the OP's well-written sentiments, I do not believe his suggestion has merit. How many different things would be off limits for people if BioWare would have to cater to every phobia? This is an unfair burden to any developer. With the exception of his suggestion of greater enemy diversity (which is rarely bad), I believe his suggestion of a patch or mod to disable the spiders should be ignored.

You know this is only going to encourage the devs to add even bigger spiders in the next game and then I'll hate you forever for this.

Next game they'll make a spider big enough to fight a dragon and it'll be just like Godzilla versus Mothra and it'll be awesome without even pressing a button.

Oh God  I totally agree. Those Rad-Roaches in Fallout 3 just gave me a major case of the whillies.

I will totally amit to waisting ammo on those suckers just to be certain they are dead and could never bring myself to loot the bodies.

Personally while I will agree with the fact that the spiders were over done I for one didn't have a problem with them or the huge ones. I learned that they hate electricity and a mage with a staff that does electrical damage and has elemental damage can be a great help against them.

I...can't tell if this is serious. This is a parody thread, right? Someone help me out. I have issues with jokes....

I suffer from ichthyophobia. A fear of fish. But feel free to use fish as much as you like. If a game can get me to irrationally scream and run from my couch like a little girl, I consider that a success. : )

As much as I hate spiders, the "Massive Spiders" don't bother me as much as I thought they would. They pop up in fantasy so frequently (no thanks to Shelob, I'm sure) that they're just part of the furniture. I wanted to take one home to guard Hawke's estate.

Wasps and scorpions are a different matter entirely. Brr. I'm never playing New Vegas again, I assure you.

I have arachnophobia. I've gotten over it a bit over the years, but seeing them in games has never bothered me that much. Maybe in Doom and Half Life I was a bit freaked out by the spider like enemies but that was mainly due to it being dark, the sound of them scurrying around and jumping out of the dark at me.

They never bothered me in DA:O or in DA2, I prefered DA:O though as they hardly appeared. They really are over used in RPG or MMO games. You can guarantee at least one dungeon or area that is swarming with spiders, or spider like creatures, in every RPG or MMO. So it is very nice to see that Bioware think they are a overused, there are so many other types of creatures that could be used or based on instead.

Spiders make me quite uneasy as well. In this game though, it is not the image of spiders, but the associated sound effects that creep me the hell out. I can hear them now as I'm typing this...ugh.

I thought about installing that mod. I bet it looks kick-ass when the mabari repel from the ceiling every 15 secs in the cave this game has.
