300,000 people dead, a mass relay destroyed, and a star system is gone. Somebody has a lot of explaining to do. Shepherd now has three options:
 
1. Go rogue. That will likely start a war with the Alliance and the Batarians.
2. Go to trial on Earth and explain his actions as a means of convincing the Alliance, the Council and the Batarians that he was justified in his actions.
3. Sacrifice himself in order to preserve peace so that the Alliance, Batarians, and Council are not weakened when the Reapers finally do show up.
 
Option one will make him the most hunted man in the galaxy. Attention paid looking for him will make the galaxy vulnerable to a surprise Reaper invasion because every effort will be made to bring him to justice. Option 2 is a good idea, except for the fact that nobody believes Shepherd and the Council thinks that he is nuts anyway. Remember the Turian Councilor questioning your mental stability?
 
That leaves option 3 as the only viable outcome. Chances are that we will try for 2, but end up with 3 because we don't have the evidence to prove that we are right. I am fully expecting to be a prisoner in either an Alliance or Batarian prison awaiting execution when the Reapers show up.
 
This accomplishes a few objectives. First, it allows the Reapers to enact plan C for the invasion. Second, the surviving indoctrinated project team members are going to lie their hind ends off about what transpired on that asteroid fingering you as a murdering psychopath that just snapped. Third, there is no way with the lies being told by the survivors, the lack of evidence to support your story, and the Council backing way off of you, that the Batarians are going to believe any of this. Therefore Shepherd is prevented from interfering with and stopping the upcoming Reaper invasion.
 
This brings us to a guilty verdict, gavel falls, and off to death row as one of the greatest mass murderers in galactic history to the shame of humans everywhere, and there is nothing that you can do to stop it. Unless, of course, you want the Reapers to win.
 
That is what I see coming in ME3. I think that it's going to be one hell of a ride.
