3 ranged + 1 melee tends to be what I do too. Usually the melee is a warrior, but sometimes it's a rogue. I use the dog too, though, so that's really another melee.

I usually go warrior, dagger rogue, archer, mage. It is how I did it in DAO and how I did it in DA2, and it works like a charm.
