It's always tempting to play with mods that alter NPC faces, but it causes me some weird problems. I was curious how other people feel about this...

I played Origins many times, using one of the various Leliana morphs to make her look prettier, and more like the "Sacred Ashes" version. Everything was fine. Until I played the Leliana's Song DLC. I literally forgot what Leliana "really" looked like, and it threw me for a loop. I was like, "Who the heck is that? Wait, that's Leliana!? She doesn't look like that at all! It's completely -- Oh, right... I was using mods..."

The same thing would happen in transitioning to DA2, as well. "That's not Leliana. My Leliana had blonde hair and a tattoo (or whatever)." It causes some serious disconnect.

So when I see these really awesome mods that make random NPCs and companions look different/better/whatever, I reach for that Download button... but I have to pull away. I just know I'm going to get confused and pulled out of the immersion when I see that person again in a DLC, expansion, or sequel.

How does everyone else deal with this?

I haven't yet seen any mods that I think fit the character more than the default faces. Maybe if whoever did the one mod for Origins does a DAII mod I'll use it, but I'm content with the BioWare faces for now.

Revised? Yeah, that was a fantastic mod.

Actually, I want to see someone correct the problem I'm having that was caused by Bioware! The disconnect between appearances of qunari, elves, and others (especially specific, familiar ones) really throws me off. I'd like to see a DAO mod that gives qunari horns and whatnot. I'd probably replay DAO if a full mod that re-imagines all the qunari (including Sten), elves, and dwarves was released. Heck, I might even pay money for that.

Well, unless Bioware finally decides to relase the toolset, it's no Dragon Age II Redesigned for us.

The only one that would likely throw me off is Zevran, and even then the new face looks enough like him to recognize who it is (I've seen pictures of him in DA2); I honestly don't see the faces as being that much different from DAO to DA2 as some people claim they are.

As far as face morphs for NPC's, I don't use them, even if they claim to be "lore friendly"; I just don't see the people as being the same with new morphs.

I tend to use the SA faces for Leliana and Morrigan (there's not much change in them, aside from Leliana looking prettier), and a headmorph for Sten that I found I liked. And on DA2, I use a short-hair Meredith headmorph because it just feels more fitting to the character for me, personally. Aside from that, the rest is vanilla, and Leliana actually looks much like her SA self in DA2. The Qunari in DA2 really didn't throw me off because I knew about them being horned and different from the start. So many of the elves look like Na'vi now, and Zevran looked awful. Dx. I liked his and Alistair's vanilla Origins appearances much more than how they appeared in DA2.

Sometimes I change character faces myself; it's pretty fun to do, but I don't change them around much aside from the above.

I replaced Alistair's head with a morph before I was done with Ostagar. I found it broke immersion to keep wondering which Ye Olde Apothecary he got his hair gel from. The OP has a point. The "vanilla" faces seem weird to me now.

My last couple of Origins playthroughs have been using the Ferelden Racelift mod, that makes the game a little less white. This is proving to be a real problem with Merrill, because in the Dalish Origin, she's very dark, and the pale, big-eyed, sticky-out ears version of the character seems even weirder to me than just the elf redesign would account for.

Most of the disconnect for me comes with the differences between the old and new versions. Alistair, Zevran, and Nathaniel just look *wrong* to me in DA2.

I thought Nathaniel was pretty spot on, personally. Been a while since I played Awakenings, though.

But Alistair drives me batty. I understand Merril, Zevran, Sandal, and whatnot as racial redesign. But humans didn't get a redesign. Why did his face shrink, but his head remained the same size?

The only companions who I placed a different face on were Nathaniel (modified his father's face a bit) and it seemed to fit him pretty well, Sigrun (slightly modified Dwarf Female PC Face 1) as I thought at the time that that was the only good looking female dwarf face, and I downloaded a Velanna face. All DAA.

DA2, there really hasn't been one that I've liked all that much. Including the continuity face morphs for recurring characters. I think a toolset will be needed before those are given the proper treatment that they need.

Except for the fact that they shrank his rather sizeable schnoz and got his eyecolor wrong.

And I don't mean they didn't get the shade or tone just right. His eyes were gray in Awakening and brown in DA2.

Wtf?

Yeah. Not even close to the same color.

Alistair's new face absolutely boggles my mind though. Nathaniel looks pretty much the same, minus the nose/eye thing. (And the fact that he was in the Deep Road doing some righteous Grey Wardening was awesome. :police:) Anders looks almost exactly the same to me, considering the different art style (except he lost the earring). So why does Alistair look so different?

Edit: I may complain about Alistair, but Nathaniel looked great to me except for the eye thing and I was really impressed with Anders. Also very impressed with Leliana. Kudos to whoever did the art on those three.

And even my disappointment with Alistair/Zevran was mitigated by the voice acting. Spot on! :wizard:

Exactly. Why? WHY? I understand the ones who got redesigned. But Alistair ... why didn't they just import the same head and call it a day?

I deal with this by going through all the DLC, expansions, etc and modding the models so the character has the singular appearance I want her/him to have.
