So for endgame tanks, if Alistair is my main tank throughout the game and I want to keep him as my tank, how will the story "suffer" if I let Loghain be king, as that's what I'm guessing happens from what I've glanced over.  I've used Shale before, though I probably built her wrong, and would instead go with str/dex instead of con, as before she'd be constantly knocked down aaaaalllllll the time     Yes, I'm sure it was because of how I built her...   But I still want to keep Alistair.  Unless the ending is horrible with Loghain as king.  boooo decisions

Isn't Loghain a regent?

If you spare Loghain at the Landsmeet, you lose Alistair. Period. He can be king (if hardened), exiled, or executed, but he's not in your party anymore. If you want to keep Alistair for the archdemon fight, you'll have to execute Loghain.

If Loghain dies by stabbing the archdemon, he is redeemed and hailed as a hero. If he survives, he goes around recruiting Grey Wardens.
