Okay guys, I just re-installed SPSS on my computer and have some preliminary figures from the survey:

As we can note from the numbers, Varric is the most popular, and given his low standard deviation, everyone is in agreement that he is a great character. In comparison, characters with high standard deviations tend to indicate large differences in opinion between various members of the community.

I'll try to come up with some z-scores as well, to see how these characters fall along the “overall” average.

Agreed.  Carver was way ahead on my hate meter, but when I read Sebastian is the only one who has a problem with Hawke taking the DuPois shortcut to save his/her mother?  Wow.  Even Anders and Fenris understand the urgency of the situation and don't blame you for taking the blood magic teleport to save your mother from a serial killer.  But Sebastian thinks you should wander the streets just hoping to come along some clue (obviously you do, but realistically it's extremely unlikely to happen) instead of taking a shortcut that some priestess told him was immoral.  I lack the proper words to express my utter disgust at Sebastian.

I actually quite liked Carver - I wanted to slap him a few times, sure, but I can totally understand why someone in his position would be the way he is.

Thanks for carrying out this survey and posting the results. :-) I honestly didn't think that any companion character was actually bad (I loved them all, even if some really frustrated me), but it's interesting to see how others feel about them.

I litterally just got past this part. I didn't know I could go back to Dupuis. I let him live, but I was in a rush to save my mom.

After my first playthrough, i didn't like anders, and then when i had a lot of trouble doing harder difficulty because i wouldn't have him in my party (and thus lacked healing oomph) i liked him even less.

This is really just a roundabout way of asking for another non-player mage to have spirit healer/groupheal/res functionality .

Funny, I would bet that popularity is influenced at least in part by the character's "likeability quotient". No matter how good he was to poke fun at, Carver was not exactly likeable. When my character was a real arse though, I realized how responsive his character actually was. lol Interesting summary to read, thanks for sharing it!

Varric: incredibly easy going, immensely likeable and his voice actor did a fantastic job, who-ever it was. He was like a dwarven teddy bear with a crossbow. Hug, hug, kill, rinse, repeat.

Weird results! I expected Fenris to be higher ranked, though I guess it's just the people I fall in with. I didn't expect Carver to be so disliked, either. o.0 Weird stuff. Looks like there's a lot of conflict among the community for preference, though, aside from Varric. Interesting prelim figures.

It's alright to hate a companion. I can't stand Anders. I didn't think it was possible to hate a Bioware companion. Good job Bioware. Seriously I always felt that characters were designed too much to be liked. It was just too easy to relate to them. Some of them were close. Ashley, and Morrigan.
But Anders really crossed a line for me, and it is surprising to have a companion I genuinly hate. I love Fenris though even if we're semi-rivals. I refuse to metagame so Fenris tends to stay in the middle for me.

Edit: Love Carver even though we ended up as sibling rivals. Bethany seemed annoying to me. Good thing I'm a mage. I, er, mean......

I'm glad she's dead.
