It's remarkable how equal the romances are, once you split them by gender.

I will have stratified information for gender coming soon as well.

Out of curiosity, I also had SPSS give me the correlation coefficients between Merrill and Isabela, and it appears that there is very little correlation between the way people voted for Merrill and Isabela.

I can't for the life of me figure out why Varric is so popular.

He's agreeable, funny, has a sense of humor about himself, has nothing bad to say about Hawke, and is as much (more) the protagonist of the story as Hawke.

He also opens locks, disarms traps, and doesn't afraid of anything!

I merely fear his baffling popularity is just going to encourage BioWare to have another story framed by him.
At which point I will scream.

Varric's the loveable dwarf sidekick... What's hard to understand?

Oh let's see, he's a braggart, a liar, a user, generates more oil than BP and can't get epilogues right.

I don't see your complaints. I don't see him as any of that (epilogue notwithstanding, since it's hard to tell an epilogue when he doesn't have all the character information he'd need). How is he any more of a user than any other character? I mean, at most, I suppose you could say that he has his criminal ties, but he uses them to help Hawke and company. He puts pretty much the entire party on his tab at the Hanged Man, he looks out for the party members at risk (Merrill and Anders, specifically, though he clearly is out to help Fenris at the start of Act III), and he wants Hawke on the expedition, not as hired muscle but as a full partner. If anything, he's practically the Team Parent (but don't tell him I said so, I prefer to admire Bianca from a distance).

The sample size was pretty big, I'll leave it at that.

The bigger your sample, the closer to the "true" mean that your results will be, but of course, there is the factor of dimishing returns as well, and as with every character survey I have conducted here, people's opinions on characters can vary wildly from one month to the next, suggesting that attempting to conduct a census and calculate the "true" mean is all but impossible.

However, we can calculate a range of means, and we have confidence intervals for that.

Very interesting!

I love that Merrill and Isabela are neck-and-neck behind Varric (and their romances got most people's votes as well). They were my two favorite characters, so I feel validated :P

Thanks for posting your results!

I would guess it has something to do with the actual sexuality of a lot of the demographic.

That's not his fault!

How can you dislike our hirsute diminuative storyteller?

And it's not that baffling of popularity really. He doesn't blow up anything, he's funny, not a blood mage, and will side with you regardless of your choices (except for in the Fade where hilariously Anders is the only truly loyal one).

Wow, Varric. I for one thought he was easily the worst character in the game (after Sebastian).

Hope we won't end up getting a "Varric's song" or "Bianca's tale" DLC.

Varric's not a standlone sort of character, I think. He's best working off of the other characters.

Thanks for sharing this! Interesting results, I think I submitted for it I can't remember. My favourite three characters seem to be some of the most popular (or in the case of Varric, the most popular). Not sure how I feel about that, I usually like to support the underdog or oddball choice hah! But when characters are as fun and likable as Isabela and Merrill I'm not overly surprised.

Poor Carver though, I'm still looking forward to my first Mage playthrough to see what he's like beyond the prologue.

Baffling for you maybe, a good number of us saw it coming over half a year ago. =] Oh and if he so much as turns up in another DA game your scream will probably be drowned out by the sound (yes the sound) of smug satisfaction.

On a more serious note, if you are going to hold those things against him (regardless of how true they are) then how can you like any of the characters? They almost all lie or outright betray you, or otherwise have negative traits that mar their personality. I'm more baffled by your bafflement than anything.

I personally thought Varric was the best character myself. He is just too likeable. He does nothing in-game which would ever make you loathe him, and for this reason, I believe that is why most people thought he was the best character. Everything he did does not attract a pip of controversy whatsoever.

Merrill is second, and Aveline is third.

Not gonna lie, Aveline was one of my favorite characters. That quest where she talks to Donnic was classic.

Aye, it's neigh impossible to get a reading on a large number of people's with a very low margin of error.  That's why election polls are wrong so often.  No matter how big your sample size, there are factors you simply can't accurately gauge.  For instance in this case, the opinions are coming from forumgoers who actively gave feedback.  But what of the more casual fan who isn't into it enough to be responding to forum polls?  They're going to be less likely to examine things thoroughly and be less critical of many aspects of a character or their actions because they simply don't care as much.  It can go both ways too.  Does the casual fan dislike Anders more because they don't know how the Chantry and the Templars are connected, or do they like him more because they didn't really care about the grand cleric, a relatively minor character?  I'm not trying to start another Anders debate of course, just trying to help demonstrate why, as you say, it's virtually impossible to factor in every variable.

Anyway, I ramble too much.  This was an enlightening piece of data.  Thank you.

Poor Carver.

I'm happy to see Sebastian is hated by most, but Carver deserves more.

Also, it's funny how similar are the numbers for Anders and Fenris: I guess the community is pretty much divided in half when it comes to those two ;)

Well, I like the both, even if I strongly prefer Anders.

Varric, Merrill, and Aveline? Sir, you're top three and mine are the exact same. Bravo. They also make a decent team for most classes. Merrill overlaps a bit with a Mage Hawke but is still useful in her own ways.

I didn't like Carver at all, until one line when he was being all obtuse about something and Hawke says " My brother has a point, it's on his head but there you have it." or something like that. His response was more sibling rivalry than just simply being an arse. Oh, he is still an arse alright, but at least he took a good ribbing. =) Fenris I liked because he added a lot to some of the quests and had some interesting things to say when just out and about in Kirkwall.

He wasn't the same Anders from Awakening. Most likely why.

Oooh ranking is hard for me as I can never make up my mind. Is there an "I love them all" option? No? This distresses me just thinking about it... :(

I'm glad I missed this survey the first time around. It would have taken me forever to answer it...>.<
