I think it has more to do with what happens in the end with the Chantry.

If I remember correctly, there wasn't too much relative ranking... it was giving each companion a score out of ten. There were "best romance" questions, and (maybe) "best companion" questions, but we weren't actually asked to rank them from favorite to least favorite.

Anders is one of those characters you really like or really really hate, hence him having one of the largest standard deviations. Not the most popular in terms of likability, but I'm sure he inspires some of the strongest opinions.

Correct.

Perhaps in the next iteration of this survey, I might ask people to rate the romances from 1 to 10 as well. Thank you for bringing that one up.

Ooooh, I don't think I would have been much help then.  I would have given most everyone a 10 with maybe one 9 and an 8.

This survey lacks an important information: whether the respondent owns the Exiled Prince DLC. Not everyone has bought it, so those who have not won't vote Sebastian as the worst companion. If the survey had asked for ownership of the DLC (or maybe it had, but that detail is not included in the results) you would be able to categorise the results thus (and what I think the result would be):

Worst companion by players who owned the Exiled Prince DLC:
1. Sebastian (by a huge margin)
2. Carver
3 ... and so on

Worst Companion by players who do not own the Exiled Prince DLC:
1. Carver
2. Fenris
3 ... and so on (this list will not include Sebastian)

From what I've read, most people didn't like him before that.  They took two good characters and mashed them into one character that just ****es constantly.  They ruined two characters to make one that you don't even want to hear talk.  Personally I don't mind his attitude, but by and large the gaming public cannot stand characters who complain regardless of if they have good reason to complain.  While he wouldn't be as unpopular as he is now, I think he'd have been recieved better if they used a totally new character for his part in DA2 rather than merge two pretty likeable pre-existing characters.

Excellent point. Something I had forgotten to include, since I personally had pre-ordered the game and received the SE. Perhaps it's something for the next iteration of this survey (which may come out when BioWare releases the next major bit of DLC).

I was pleasantly surprised that Fenris wasn't the worst companion.  I thought for sure he'd take that crown, but he managed to beat out both Sebastian and Carver! Erm...but yeah...right.

I for one am surprised it wasn't Anders. I had no trouble hating him long before the Chantry.

I loved Varric. He was almost always in my party. Actually, my party was usually filled with my favourite characters. Aside from friend/rival bar building and companion quests, my party was always: Varric, Fenris, Anders. Aveline is fourth and the rest of them are all about the same. Except Carver, who was a complete ******. I'd take post-Chantry Anders over Carver any day of the week.

ME TOO!  I missed him a great deal!  Sorry to spam with just the one comment, but yeah.  He's the only Origins character I ever wanted to come back!  Sten is <3!!

Interesting results. I figured Anders would be one of the more divisive characters, and that seems to be pretty true. It's sad to see so much hate for Carver, though. I personally really liked him, especially on his Warden path. I feel like he overcame some of his jealously issues and grew into himself, so to speak. My personal top 5 would be as follows:

1) Anders
2) Aveline
3) Varric
4) Carver
5) Isabela

Poor Carver. I adored him, but I can see why people would find him insufferable. And no surprise that Anders is extremely divisive.

Anders and Sebastian are tied for my least favorite (just barely ahead of the siblings) because of the way they constantly harp about mages and chantry, respectively, in party banter. They have next to nothing else to say most of the time. Yes, I understand why Anders is the way he is, and I actually do enjoy him as a party member when in non-banter areas, lol. Fenris harps on mages, but it's not to quite the same extent in party banter, and his comments in conversations tend to be short and less annoying to me. I find myself very rarely running a party without him in it, even when I play a warrior.

Who gets used the least according to your data?

I imagine this has a lot to do with what difficulty the person is using.  At casual, you can survive just fine with the worst combatants and have lots of leeway to use the characters you like.  On nightmare, you need to min/max and can't afford having a party that pops like a water balloon when the first demon gives them a stern look.

Huh. I thought Fenris would have been more popular. Ah well, he's still my favorite.

I can see why people don't favor Carver, but IMO Bioware did do a great job capturing the bickering sibling thing. I actually quite liked that heated argument you can have with your brother in Act 1. I don't have a brother myself, but I do remember a time when my older sister and I would act like that.

My least favorites are a cross between Aveline and Sebastian. Aveline just grated on my nerves at times. Asking me to do all that stuff that her own guards couldn't do, when in the mean time, I give her a shield and she goes on about how I ask her to do things she doesn't agree with and how she bends over backwards for me. Sheesh, I take her along maybe twice in each Act. For her it's, "Hawke! Walk 100 feet over there and post this roster on the board for me!" She does have her strong points though.

Sebastian though... I'm almost tempted just to not do his personal quest in Act 1 in my next play through. LOVE his voice. Could listen to his VA all day. But I hate being preached at by religious zealots in real life as well as in game. It's "Maker this" and "Maker that!" And a chaste marriage? Really? And he's kinda useless to me. Lets see... Archer that preaches on and on about religion or.... Varric. Yeah, no contest there.

As for best romance. Can't say I've romanced Isabela and Merill, but I have with Fenris and Anders. Anders was disappointing to me. Mostly because he doesn't kiss you in the end. I spare his life and keep him with me. I tell him I'll stay by his side through thick and thin, and not even a peck on the cheek. Lame!

Fenris is just too darn alluring. I started my first play through with the intent on romancing Anders. I wanted to in Awakening and couldn't so I figured, "Yes! Here's my chance!" I start flirting with him and then along comes Fenris and then its, "Anders who?" Good on you, David Gaider!
