I imagine this has a lot to do with what difficulty the person is using. At casual, you can survive just fine with the worst combatants and have lots of leeway to use the characters you like. On nightmare, you need to min/max and can't afford having a party that pops like a water balloon when the first demon gives them a stern look.

Okay guys, I just re-installed SPSS on my computer and have some preliminary figures from the survey:
As we can note from the numbers, Varric is the most popular, and given his low standard deviation, everyone is in agreement that he is a great character. In comparison, characters with high standard deviations tend to indicate large differences in opinion between various members of the community.
I'll try to come up with some z-scores as well, to see how these characters fall along the “overall” average.

Out of curiosity, I also had SPSS give me the correlation coefficients between Merrill and Isabela, and it appears that there is very little correlation between the way people voted for Merrill and Isabela.

This game has some of the best female followers of all time for me.
My top three favorites of all the companions were Isabela, Merrill, and Aveline.

So when people say they hated the character, is it a "love to hate", or is it a hate due to bad writing? I'm guessing it's the character's POV that would be disagreeable with the player's hence the hate (thinking of Anders and his hypocritical statements in Act III)

It implies that liking Isabela and Merrill are 'independent events.'... in other words, liking one does not affect or influence whether or not you like the other.
I find this rather strange; do you see this lack of correlation holding after separating males and females?

But then IN the fade, if you DON'T agree to trade in Feynriel for some reward with the Sloth demon, you get +5 rivalry with Merrill.

I'm curious what percentage of survey takers were male and female - it kind of seems like that may be why Merrill and Isabella got so much more love than Fenris and Anders.
Personality wise, I love all four of them - but I found Fenris and Anders to be waaay for useful in combat. My first playthrough (mage), Isabella kept dying all the time, so I never used her, and I was romancing Anders so I always had him with me instead of Merrill.
Second playthrough now (rogue), and Isabella's still useless (cos my rogue is better), and I really, really put effort into using Merrill instead of Anders (wanted to see the different dialogs and such), but I just found she pales in comparison. Her individual tree is a watered down version of blood mage, and no access to creation spells really hurts (Anders' casting glyph of paralysis had made so many battles go soooo much better).

73% male, 27% female. I will try to stratifiy the data by both gender and sexual orientation to remove any inconsistencies later.
