Not the wimminz.
Men seem like female characters more, and women seem to like male characters more. No surprises there.

I think it has more to do with what happens in the end with the Chantry.
From what I've read, most people didn't like him before that. They took two good characters and mashed them into one character that just ****es constantly. They ruined two characters to make one that you don't even want to hear talk. Personally I don't mind his attitude, but by and large the gaming public cannot stand characters who complain regardless of if they have good reason to complain. While he wouldn't be as unpopular as he is now, I think he'd have been recieved better if they used a totally new character for his part in DA2 rather than merge two pretty likeable pre-existing characters.
It wasn't just the chantry that made me dislike Anders. It was his constant nagging an whining. He has nothing to say besides his constant complaining about the situation of mages.
Even if I dislike Carver. He got one thing right:
Anders: You don't like me, Carver?
Carver: I don't like you.
Anders: That's unfortunate. Hating someone just because they're a mage is a shameful thing.
Carver: I don't hate you because you're a mage. I hate you because you won't shut up about it.

I merely fear his baffling popularity is just going to encourage BioWare to have another story framed by him.
At which point I will scream.
That's not his fault!
How can you dislike our hirsute diminuative storyteller?
And it's not that baffling of popularity really. He doesn't blow up anything, he's funny, not a blood mage, and will side with you regardless of your choices (except for in the Fade where hilariously Anders is the only truly loyal one).
Technically in the Fade Justice takes over, and if you side with that sloth demon (the first one you run into in the middle room, not the ones in the side rooms) he'll turn on you for accepting a demon's offer.

Those would players that played as a Mage. I hated Fenris because of his opinion about the Mages and I like Anders because of support for them.... but then he blew up the Chantry and abolished any peaceful resolution and I was forced to kill him. So to me it's really the choice of the lesser of two evils... a choice that I am still trying to make.

Varric the most, naturally.

Carver as worst character?
People really do hate characters that don't like them... Carver was one of the most awesome characters, seeing him with Stroud as a Grey Warden in Act 2 and then later in Nathaniels quest as the lone surviving Warden was awesome. Honestly I'd rate him at top 3 characters in the game, nice to have that brother rivalry and not the whole "Command me beloved brother" thing Bethany goes about.
Sebastian and Cloud Strife, I mean Fenris were worse.
----------------
I really liked Carver too. I would have liked to been able to have him in the party the whole game. I have always made him a warden.
I am definitely an outlier. My favorite characters are
Seb
Carver
Fenris
Varric
Anders
I like people with convictions, even if I don't have the same opinion. I didn't care so much for Anders, but that is because I absolutely loved him in Awakening.

Anders, Fenris, and Carver were hated. Anders because he was a whiny ****** who blew up the chantry cause he thought it was "the only way". ******. Fenris, because he was a jerk to mages and reminded me too much of Edward. Carver was an ass. Nuff' said.

eta: AND... after you kill the minions, & discover it was some wacko rich nemesis, does he want vengeance still? Nope! He will go pray for her. Oh, don't pray for the minions who were hired into this! Just the batty old lady who was of your class! And when he says he'll pray for the soul of his various victims, I so long to point out he's praying for a spider!
Oh, & when you suggest his people might need him, he says he's forgotten them, so leave them to my lazy cousin or whatever... So - never mind THEM - he's selfish and he's got this smirky way of saying things that makes me just vicious. And I don't get the option to say so!
A great voice can get you far, but not *that* far.

I think I missed something, what is so bad about Varric? He keeps criminals away from Anders's clinic (and even if you don't agree with Anders at the end of the game you can at least praise him for his free clinic) and delivers food to Merrill when she won't leave her house. He is fun to be around and offers you and your brother/sister the chance to become business partners so you can leave Lowtown and buy back your family's estate for your mom. The only thing he did wrong was get slightly messed up buy the Idol, but then again he wasn't the only one and it is really out of his control.
Oh wait, I get it, you're just jealous of his amazing chest hair and jealous of his over the top crossbow.

My top five would have been something like:
1. Anders
2. Varric
3. Aveline
4. Carver
5. Merrill
Ha, that's really close to mine except for Carver. Smug ******. Understood where he came from, but his reaction to not going to the deep roads, to my mage Hawke, just put him in the "please go die" category for me.
1. Anders (still my blondie-bear)
2. Varric (bromance!~)
3. Merrill (cutie patootie)
4. Aveline (best girl bud ever)
5. Fenris (he grew on me, despite my magey ways)

You ever notice that when you take him into the fade, the demons never even address him? That has been my experience at least. Last run I took he and Merrill in, first demon chose Merrill, second demon began fight without an offer.
He literally cannot turn on you, or betray you, or decide that he doesn't like you and leave.
It may be programmatic, but that is absolute loyalty. how can you compare that to the fickle nature of other companions?
I move that Varric be henceforth no longer considered a "companion" but rather your co-star.

I'm still resenting Sebastian, for having this amazing voice & dramatic scene, and then turning out to be the choir boy from hell in party banter. First of all, his grand heroic entrance is just him putting a slip of paper to get someone to kill the minions who killed his family. When you confront the perpetrator, he brings you along as a shield lest his bloodline be lost - the very bloodline he refuses to keep up, because suddenly he's chaste again. (unless I bother to make him my power mad rival - and noooo thank you) Then he threatens you when you stick by your friend (and if you don't, I guess he still does something likewise twitish.) And when he threatens you, he'll do what? Get more people to attack you *for him.* UGH!

I agree. Sebastian is a rash, foolish hypocrite just like the other companions. Do you remember how he tried to persuade Varric to forgive Bartrand while he himself never bothered to forgive the mercenaries who slaughtered his family? And if you defend Anders after the Chantry incident, Sebastian will threaten Hawke that he will raise up a large army to march against Kirkwall. What have Kirkwall citizens done to him? Nothing.
Just ignore him. He's beyond redemption. So far the only companion that I truly liked was Varric. Every companion is either stupid or stubborn in his/her own way.

I had Varric, Isabella, and Anders with me in the Fade. And Varric turned on me, as did Isabella. Anders/Justice was the one who was loyal.

Each demon has a specific set of companions that they can corrupt. Varric and Merrill are turned by the same demon so only Merrill was turned against you. Anders doesn't get turned by any demon, but if you make the offer with that very first demon (the sloth demon that looks like a common shade) then he'll turn on you.
