If you prefer armor, you may also want to look into the No Stat Requirement mod on Nexus which opens all armor up to mages. This is what I did because sometimes the Apostate Wardrobe mod produces invisible NPCs (usually with elves). It's a little immersion-breaking for me, and I prefer the look of the rogue armor anyway.
Another option which I'm using this time around is just getting the Champion armor upon landing at Kirkwall. Everyone else gets an iconic outfit, so I am too. If you want, you can change the color of it upon changing acts (I'm planning on running with the brown-fur version until I hit Act 3, then I'll swap over to silverite which looks a bit more noble, befitting of the mage who slew the Arishok).
Either way, I'm with you that default robes are terrible and walking around in them always made me feel like I was advertising what I was. At least carrying the staff might be explained as a walking aid ("You wouldn't make a Blight refugee part from his walking stick, now would you?"), but the robes are a dead giveaway.
Thank you Highcastle, I noticed what you were talking about with the invisible characters. I hadn't tried the "No Stat" mod, if you happen to have a link I'd appreciate it.
As for the Champion armor in Act 1, I wanted to finish one more play-through before modding to much of the game. But as of right now, that play through is finished so....Off to mod I go!

Thanks again, I'll check back for the link.
