So, in order to try to avoid that for ME3, I'd like to start the "Realistic Expectations" thread, a.k.a. the "Pessimist" thread. Not because I don't expect Bioware to make a great game (I know they will), but because it's pretty much impossible for them to live up to the massive expectations that we fans have built up for ME3.
My hope is that if we, as fans, start thinking about what we can plausibly expect to see in ME3, rather than just what we want to see, then maybe we will be able to enjoy ME3 more when we finally get our grubby little mitts on it.
After mulling it over for a bit, here are my realistic expectations for ME3. Please feel free to share your own, or argue about mine if you disagree. Although since this is the pessimist thread, if you state "I think X will definitely be in the game," you should follow it up with, "but that probably means that Y won't be."
Characters:
There are probably 100+ threads detailing whether certain characters will return, and whether they will be squadmates, etc. I can only make a guess based on my own opinions, but here's what my pessimistic self thinks will happen:
- A few popular characters will return and be available as squadmates (like around 3, max), This is based on what Mac Walters had to say in his chat a few days ago. Characters like Tali, Garrus, and Miranda, for example. (Please don't yell at me, that's just an example...).
- A few characters will not return as squaddies, but will be involved in major plot quests (similar to the role that Liara had in LotSB). I can see characters like Mordin, Wrex, Legion, Tali, and the Virmire Survivor filling these roles. If they died they will be replaced with a "placeholder" (like Wreav/Wrex), who might have less dialogue.
- Liara will replace TIM/Hackett as our quest giver.
- All the rest will have either a small cameo (for DLC characters/unpopular characters) or have a short side mission devoted to them.
- Non-squadmates, like Shiala/Gianna/Conrad, will have the same sort of presence that they had in ME2.
- No matter what, there will be one or two characters who will be mishandled. Just hope that it's not your fav...
tldr version: Not all former squadmates will be treated equally in ME3.
Choices:
- Although I wish every choice I made in the first two games could impact ME3, I don't see that realistically happening. Maybe a few major ones, such as whether we kept the collector base, will have a meaningful impact, but I think most of the seemingly important ones will just be briefly referenced.
- I also don't see the resolution of major conflicts being made into choices. For example, I think that the Krogan genophage question either (a) won't be completely resolved or (
- For that reason, I think all the major choices in ME3 will determine the fates of individual characters, rather than whole species.
tldr version: A few important choices from ME1/ME2 will matter, and the choices we make in ME3 will affect individual characters, not entire races.
The Ending:
- While it certainly would be nice to have hundreds of different endings, I think we're going to have not going to have more than 3 or 4 major possible outcomes.
- There will be no "Reapers win" scenario, since Bioware needs to preserve the ME universe for future games.
- A few important questions will be answered, but there will be a lot of things that won't. A lot of things we are calling plot holes now (but are actually just lack of information at this point) will probably remain plot holes.
Romance:
- There will be one major romance scene for the LIs. It will probably be pretty similar across LIs, and will probably be similar to the "last hurrah" scenes from the previous games.
Length:
- Whatever fits on 2 Xbox 360 discs. I can't remember exactly how long ME2 was but I'd imagine that it'd be comparable to that. We're not going to be getting 100+ hours of gameplay.
Gameplay:
- The gameplay will be tweaked, but no major changes will be made. Maybe a few more skills will be added to the leveling system, or the Hammerhead will be given better armor. But it's not going to stray too far from what we saw in ME2. Heatsinks and cover based shooting are here to stay.
