Since the Arishok is one of three pillars of the Qun, it's safe to say they'll replace him with a new Arishok real quick. I don't know why, but I have a sneaking suspicion it will be "Sten" from Origins. Thoughts?

i dont think that's how Qunari society works. Aren't people "born" into their place, as opposed to being promoted? If there was room for promotion or growth i suspect there would also be room for dissent...

Kinda hard actually. They will have to evaluate a bunch of new qunari kiddies to see who has the snuff. Filling in the role of Arishok will take much time.

Idk, I think it could be quick, a group of promising qunari born to be Arishok will probably duel it out.  victor gets the spoils.

The preparation would be years but all the while current arishoks are in power.

That is still years, they are lucky enough if a worthy qunari is born this year. Then you have to wait for that Qunari to get into power. The warriors have no one to follow. Killing the Arishok is a bit of a boner for our horned fellows.

That is why there isn't just 1 leader in the Qunari. But I'm sure the Ariqun has a bit on her plate atm.

If they do make a new Arishok they are 'born' into it. It's their role they play. They can't elevate upwards in their society only deteriorate and lose their honor/who they are as a Qunari.

Is someone born to be an Arishok specifically, or born to that caste / "career path"?

Whose to say really. The Writers could explain something. We can assume something. I have a hard time imaging a Sten just becoming a Arishok. The Qunari are generally calm and collected. They have waited a long time. Unless the Writers want to do something more with them in DA3? They don't even have to show the players a new Arishok. The only reason he left Par Vollen was because the Tome was taken. It's not like the devs were also showing us the other 2 heads of the Triumvarite. The only Qunari trader we have seen was in Awakenings that wasn't even following the Qun.

Is "Arishok" a singular position among all the Qunari? There seems to be some confusion.

They can come from any branch of the army. All start out at grunt level.

And they are chosen for what they do at the age of 12 (IIRC), then they get educated for that role and proceed to do it for the rest of their life.

There are promotions. No Arishok has ever taken up the job at the age of 12. Your "role" is "military." or "priesthood." Not, "Second assistant undergardener."

Good to know. I got the impression that that'd be the case considering the artisan jobs, where a smith would be different from a mason for example. Is it any different there?

You get promoted within your field, as much as possible. It's also always possible for a mason or a smith to eventually become Arigena.

Sten can't be Arishok. He can only be Sten. He can never be more or less than the role he was born into.

[Edit] Wait wait.  I wrote that before I saw Mary Kirby's explanation.  Sten was born military, so it may be possible.

He used to be a grunt. So no, he has been other stuff.

Well, wouldn't it be the same between a scout and a cannoneer? Or does every soldier start at grunt level?

All soldiers start at grunt level, though in different military branches. Grunts in the navy require slightly different aptitudes than grunts in the infantry or cavalry.
