My first play through I decided to autolevel my companions and only do it manually for Hawke. Bad mistake! After a few levels no abilities are being added when I autolevel. I didn't notice this until several levels later. So my companions are now several abilities behind in the game, which probably means I'll have to play on easiest later on. >:-(
No abilities when auto leveling!

I assume you've confirmed that it is not because the game chooses to upgrade existing abilities rather than get new ones?

Well, no new ability icons got activated. It stopped after a few levels.
