its often meant as compliment .... and I hate this, especially since I work in the IT (for a long time now).

True story:  A friend was at a LARP event talking to some guy who turned round and said "You're quite smart for a woman."  Really.  He then realised he may have given the wrong impression and said "Oh, I'm not coming onto you or anything!"  Yeah, she wasn't impressed, and spent the event trying the avoid the guy who seemed intent on trying to stalk her.
